GK's leg.

Post by bpaquet on Sat Nov 19, 2016 3:32 pm

So... When GK decides to get hurt, he does it with style. Spiral fracture of the humerus. He needs surgery. The vet is stabilizing it for the weekend, and off we go to the vet that took care of Gateway on Monday. Sigh... My wallet is sad. I am glad we took him to be checked though. The feline humerus does not heal well on its own. Sad

That's awful.  Prayers of comfort and healing sent.   I understand about your wallet. The beer fund has a bit in it if you need help.

We'll be fine. We're fortunate. Thank you though! I love you

Latest development is that he wiggled out of his splint. The vet thinks he will be ok as long as he stays pretty still. He's on strong opiates, so he probably will sleep a lot. I will help him in/out of the litter box. He has a setup under his favorite desk with a pillow to lie on, bowls of food/water next to it, and litter box with a ramp on the other side. I think he will be fine as long as I keep him doped up.

Silly kit. I set up a bed underneath the breakfast table when Antonio tore his ACL. While this is more serious I think you've got a plan there.

Smile This is under the desk in the guest bedroom. I think he likes to read. He has a shelf with Shakespeare, Chaucer, and James Joyce on it. Smile

He seems much better today. Still broken, and his leg still doesn't work at all, but he is better with the pain meds. He has eaten a lot, and even used the ramp into the litter. I hope we will be able to get him into surgery tomorrow, but I am concerned about the fasting time required. He's eaten dinner and I plan to feed him breakfast.

So, GK is staying at the hospital overnight. They did surgery in the late afternoon so he had time to fast after breakfast. Everything went well, and he's resting comfortably. They just wanted to keep him so they could monitor his vital signs and comfort level after the operation. He comes home tomorrow afternoon. Then, he goes back in 2 weeks to have the incision checked, and then in 8 weeks for followup x-rays. Smile

Now, does anyone know wallet CPR? Laughing

Re: GK's leg.

He came home today. The vets were amazed that he was willing to eat in the hospital. He feels really good considering all that's been done. He got out of the kitty jail and decided to try to scoot around the house. That's not allowed yet. But, his leg feels so much better that he's already trying to put weight on it.

Recovery plan is for him to be confined to one room for 2 weeks while the incision heals. He has steps to get on/off the guest bed, and everything he needs right in there. I put up a baby gate so he and Mouski can socialize. He will come down to sit with us at TV time. After 2 weeks, he goes for a recheck to make sure the incision is healing the right way. Then in 8 weeks he goes for an all-day appointment where they put him out and take x-rays to be sure the bone is healing. So, until then, he is quiet inside kitty. After that, he should be able to do anything he wants. His parents think he will be an inside kitty now though. This was a bit too much of an adventure.

That's wonderful news. Antonio and I will continue to say healing prayers for an uneventful recover. I agree that was way more adventure than anyone needs.

Amazing! He's putting weight on his paw already. Of course, there's still a significant limp, but he is putting his paw down the right way and actually walking. He tried to scoot out of his (very nice) kitty jail. Laughing

Now, in case anyone's worried, his kitty jail is the guest bedroom fitted with ramps onto furniture by the windows so he can look out and steps onto the bed so he has a warm, soft place to sleep. He has his favorite bathroom and a food/water station in there too. And, a servant at his beck and call. I don't know why he wants to escape. But, there he was, going at high speed to the door when I brought his crunchies for breakfast.

Oh no! GK exploded. The doctors said he would probably be constipated for a few days. Well... He was, and then he WASN'T. There was a mighty mess on the carpet for me this morning. No

He seems fine now. Ate breakfast, drank water, found a new spot to hang out.

He's fine. I think he feels much better since all that got out of him. I'm not sure I've recovered though. Razz

He is walking really well now. He hardly limps at all. Every once in a while, he puts his foot down funny, but it's amazing how much that plate has helped him.

All is back to fairly normal today. No excitement on the carpet. He is walking around more and more. He has two more days of painkillers, and then it's on to just healing on his own.

I hope we can keep him quiet. I found him curled up in the desk chair today. It was fine that he jumped up there, but the jump down is forbidden. So, I put the chair in a corner with a bunch of stuff in it. I can't think of any other stuff that he might want to jump on, but I check on him a lot just to be sure.
