This has been an exceptionally dry May here.

Exactly the opposite here. We've been cool and wet with some hot days in between. Hurricane season starts tomorrow. I need to make evacuation plans for the horses in case something wicked comes our way.

So, we were supposed to go trail riding tomorrow. We brought the truck in for an oil change today, and they found a u-joint, tie rod, and muffler that are shot. Not bad for a 12 year old heavy duty truck that works for a living, but the wallet is unhappy. No trail riding because the car won't be done until tomorrow evening. Neutral

No trail ride today, so Envoy and I went on a neighborhood road ride. We didn't go for too long because I didn't feel like arguing when he said he wanted to turn around. We braved deer, turkeys, and squirrels - oh my! Good boy didn't do anything silly except shy at (of all things!) a skink scuttling into the woods.

We went on another neighborhood road ride. Envoy was much less jumpy, so we went farther. Bingo came for a while, but decided he wanted to go back home and stay on the porch. Envoy just charged right down the road like the brave horse I know he can be. I really hope we can ride with friends soon.

Frustrated. The farrier sent me a text message to reschedule tomorrow's appointment. The horses are fine, so that isn't a problem. The problem is that he hasn't sent me the new date yet. Sigh... Things happen, and overall I'm fine with it. It's just frustrating today.

It turned out to be a nice morning for a ride. The weather was quite warm, but the humidity was low (for our area). We stayed on shady roads, and the flies weren't too bad. I found a great new fly spray that really works well and it's even safe to use on people. All natural peppermint oil is the main ingredient, and it makes us smell like a candy cane. Razz

Better watch out for rabbits then! My sisters house bunny loved peppermint candy canes.

Sabi would have been in heaven. He LOVED candy canes. I don't like them, and Envoy says they're ok, but he prefers carrots. Fortunately, we both like the smell of peppermint even if we don't like the taste so much. Razz

As long as it works and you like the smell it's okay. If Sabi were still here what do you think he'd have done after being sprayed with that oil? Try to lick it off? scratch

He probably would have pranced around thinking he was the coolest thing in the world. He might have tried tasting it once, but he would have discovered that it doesn't taste like it smells pretty quick. Laughing

It was a little too hot today for riding. The horses came in around 2, got showers, and spent the day under their fans.

Yesterday was farrier day, and Kina is trying to get used to her new shoes. She didn't get anything different done, but her leg bones are changing so much that any small change makes her trip quite a bit. She's had a couple noticeable trips (almost falls) today. When she's loose in the pasture, she's fine. When I'm leading her, she tries to pay attention to me, and loses track of her feet. Poor old girl. I don't think she's in bad pain, but I do think she frustrated at her situation.

Blanket washing day. It's my yearly trip to the laundromat, and this year I discovered that the machines have speeded up. I remember having to be there for at least 45 minutes before. This year, I was in/out in half an hour. Now, the fences are covered with blankets and liners, and Envoy's turnout is getting re-waterproofed. Summer is officially here for me.

I can picture it now: blankets flapping lightly in the breeze, the light scent of laundry soap wafting through the air, you praying the local birds flying overhead don't use them like they do our cars in parking lots.....

LOL! At least you can hose waterproof horse blankets off and they dry really quick. Most of my blanket drying areas are away from the trees, so we're normally safe.

Around here even if there isn't a tree in sight they still get my car....flying overhead to get to some trees elsewhere. They never miss!

Laughing I know that feeling. My car is a magnet. Blankets not so much.

The hummingbirds are not as active at the feeders right now. I don't know if they're caring for chicks, which means hunting more bugs, or if we just don't have as many this year. I've seen several, but the feeder wars are not going on. I hope they are here!

I haven't seen as many this summer as last year either. I wonder if they had trouble crossing the Gulf or if something happened to them while vacationing this past winter in South America.

Today's weather was so beautiful, we had to ride. It's supposed to be hot tomorrow. The flies were out, but not as bad as when it's broiling. Nice day to walk around in the pastures. The water is almost gone from the back too. Loving the lack of ponds.

Now, it's hot and humid. Summer is here. It's good that I clipped Kina. Her hair is growing back, so she has protection from the summer flies, but it isn't so thick that she's been sweating too much. All in all, I think we're ready for the dog days. I'm making a hay run for a few bales to get us through since the horses stay under the fans more in the next few months. I still won't be using hay at the rate I do in the winter.
