Today was muggy but not too oppressive. The lot next to our house has been mowed, so Envoy and I rode there. He seems to like it. The owners say I can ride there, and I told them I'd make sure I don't leave piles behind. They don't really care, but it's polite to leave things neat and clean when you're done. Smile

That it is. Besides a gunked up area draws flies and other nasties.

The farrier comes tomorrow at 6 AM. Thank goodness, but YAWN. The horses are out tonight despite the threat of rain/storms. It's just too nice out to leave them out. I'm trying to conserve hay and bedding. The dentist comes in a couple weeks, so I need to save $$.

All is good with toes. Kina continues to do well with her special shoe. She can bend her leg better because she doesn't have as much pressure on her knee. The farrier modified her shoe to support the outside part of her heel because she moves her leg funny and is kind of smashing that heel. She now has more support there.

His truck left him on the side of the road. It's a pretty old rig, so now he's thinking about a new one -- like my truck. He loves my truck. Smile I do too, although I need to put 2 new batteries in it. Always something, right?

UGH!! That sucks. Batteries are cheap in comparison to truck payments.

Oh yeah... If I had to buy a truck like the one I have (paid for already), I'd be borrowing close to $50k. Can't even imagine that diesel 4x4 trucks cost almost as much as a house in some parts of the country.

Today's horse adventure was changing pastures. The weather was surprisingly nice, so the horses were very enthusiastic about going out. Kina pranced. Laughing

I know what you mean. I've read on several sites that it is better to buy used than new. On new your upside down on the loan before the ink is dry on the loan papers.

It's really hard to find a good used diesel pickup. People hold onto them forever. Ours is 11 years old, and has 120k miles. It's just getting broken in. We took it to my new car's dealer for inspection, and they wanted to buy it from us with all those miles on it. According to the state, it's still worth almost $20k. Amazing.

No real horse adventures today. The heat and humidity are here in force. The horses have been camping in the barn during the day. Envoy even asked to come in after dark. It's just so sticky!

Last day of pony-sitting for my friend. Today is supposed to be 100 degrees. I will be glad to be down to just my own with this weather.

Wonder when we will get the fence repaired. The lumber is sitting there. We need to take down old fence and set posts, nail boards. The one relief is that we have a nail gun, so progress is pretty fast.

If you can wait till the heat backs off a bit, unless you want to be out at the crack of dawn.

Yeah... At least it's not supposed to be quite as humid tomorrow. Maybe the horses can stay out until later in the day. They were in by 10 this morning.

Re: home again home again

Post by bpaquet on Sun Jul 24, 2016 6:58 pm

I got the fence boards knocked down. It was too hot to pull posts. My friend with a real farm has offered to bring her tractor with the puller and auger to deal with those. I might take her up on that offer. It would make the work go so much faster. Just hammering boards (with a 10 pound sledge because the nails made me mad) made me huff and puff in the heat. Laughing

The horses are hanging out in the barn under fans again today. We're supposed to settle into the low 90s with not-too-bad humidity for the week. I can deal with that and just ride early/late. We'll see how work goes. I think it will be a busy week.

Take her up on it. No point in killing yourself in the heat.

We actually got the posts out late in the afternoon. It was hot work, but not too bad. It only took about 1/2 an hour. My husband just wiggled them around and they came right out. Cheap posts have some benefits.

We're all ready to put up posts next. We're trying to do things in the evening after the temps start to drop. We've been having heat indexes of about 105. Too hot to work hard in the sun.

The horses are loving their time under the fans. I don't know where they came from, but the little black biting flies have shown up. They are super annoying.

I think the heat wave is about to break. Friday is supposed to have highs in the 80s. Maybe I can break out the saddle. I hope it hasn't gone moldy.

It was still very humid, but the temps were much better. Envoy and I got a short ride in before the fly spray wore off and we were getting eaten. Then, it was fence time. We got all the posts set. We'll put up the boards tomorrow after the nail gun battery charges. Then, all we need to do is hang one of the gates. The other is already up. I think we'll be finished tomorrow.
