Today was Envoy's day to go down the road. He isn't as bold as Ruby or Lu, but he was very brave. He didn't fuss much until we got to where the mosquitoes were really bad. Then I wimped out and we came home. We just did some walking around and then went into the barn so the fans could keep the dusk bugs away. Looks like summer is coming back for the weekend.

So far we've been lucky in the bug department.

Whew! Ruby and I rode out today. Some parts of the ride were fine, but where the bugs are bad, they are BAD. Since she's gray, I could see every time I smashed one of the icky mosquitoes. She was a terrific girl as usual. She didn't complain at all. Just shook her head to get them away from her ears.

She was pretty unhappy late in the evening when the deer flies came out. She and Envoy ran around like maniacs. Lu spent his time rolling. I had to bring them in before the storms, but I felt bad not bringing them in earlier.

Crazy storm blew in tonight. I had just brought in the newly washed blankets, and the lightening went crazy. Thunder was booming. Envoy ran to the gate to come in. Ruby was running and pushing Lu ahead of her. It took about 5 minutes to get her attention, but when she realized that I wanted to bring her in, she stood still but very alert. She walked in like a good girl, and Lu came in gratefully. We got inside just as the downpours started. It's still rumbling out there, but the lightening calmed down. It looks like stalls will be a wreck tomorrow.

The boys were obviously happy to be in. Their stalls were pretty neat. Poor Ruby had a rough night. She kicked everything everywhere. Her stall leaks after the roof issues, which I got an estimate on today. Looks like a good, new roof with new rafters is on the way. Then, further barn improvements after we get a sturdy outside. I bet Ruby will be happier when her stall doesn't have a waterfall in the corner.

I can imagine. That's wonderful news about the roof. Will it take long?

We can't start until September because the contractor has another job. But, he's that good. I'll wait. Smile Once we start, the roof shouldn't take long. My husband and I will repair the side wall ourselves (easy to nail up some T1-11). Then, the rest of the improvements can go bit by bit.

It's pretty sad when you have to put on fly sheets for the night time mosquitoes. Ruby's new one has a really big belly strap, so she and Envoy need to trade. His is pretty small. I just hope they keep them on all night. I don't want to go on a hunt in the morning.

Tomorrow's dentist day. My usual dentist can't make it this year, so I'm using the backup one. I will schedule a 6 month checkup with my favorite guy, and we can do yearly visits when he isn't so busy. I hope that having his teeth done will help Lu gain some weight.

I agree, about the teeth. I would worm and do teeth, that usually took care of the problem.

I hope you don't have to hunt either.

I wormed last week. Poor Lu though! Apparently, his previous dental care was less than good. He had a bad tooth in the back that was impacted, and sheared off. That one had to come out. It was a difficult procedure. He had a lot of soft tissue damage from his bad teeth, and probably some infection from all the bad things. So, he has a big load of powdered antibiotics, some bute for pain, and some Ulcerguard for his poor tummy. We hope that getting his teeth in shape and keeping his stomach happy will help him gain some weight.

He has a followup appointment in 6 weeks. There's a little bit of the bad tooth that wouldn't come out. The dentist and vet want to see if it loosens up with time.

I hope so too. Poor pony, anyway a good mash will help set things to right.

He is quite perky this morning. He ate his hay pellet mash seasoned with bute, and went straight to grazing. I think the meds are helping, and am sure he will start to put on weight now that he can actually chew his food. He ate most of his hay in the stall last night, so that will help too. He's still taking small bites and chewing slowly. I think he's learning how his mouth is SUPPOSED to work. It's so good to see him happy and his eyes bright. Smile

I know it's too early to show much progress, but I swear the top of his bum is looking a little rounder. He's eating like he'd been starved - and he had. I am enjoying seeing him eat and have fun. New Lu!

He has been grumpy about eating his breakfast alone. Ruby and Envoy do not need breakfast when there's grass, so he gets to come in for a light hay pellet ration with his bute. He says he'd rather have company. They say they'd rather not come in to watch him eat. Fortunately, tomorrow is the last day of bute, and he can enjoy his grass with the others. I'll just bump up his hay pellets for dinner. The good thing about feeding hay pellets is that you don't have to worry as much about overfeeding. The tummy is built for grass, so more hay isn't going to upset it. Smile

That's good, though weird about wanting an audience for eating. Still who knows what goes through those pony brains.

Envoy was a star today. It was HOT outside, and a friend brought a kid he's watching to ride. I don't usually let people just ride, but the kid helped with barn chores in the heat of the day, and groomed. He seemed to have a really good time, and Envoy was a super babysitter. He didn't spook when the kid waved his arms around, and made an extra effort to listen to a brand new rider trying to understand how to use legs and hands. I love my Big Pony. I love you
