Tail troubles

Post by bpaquet on Sat Sep 06, 2014 9:19 pm

Bingo has been licking the base of his tail a lot. I haven't seen any fleas, and he has one of those new Seresto collars, which seem to work really well. He had a bath recently, and the groomer didn't see anything wrong with his skin. Anyone have ideas?

Check for impacted anal glands....they're located there and if they don't drain properly they can cause furkids to do that.

This is the top of his tail, not down by his anus. He doesn't have the scoots or the horrible smell that comes with gland troubles. (Our old kitty Shadow had that problem and PEEEEWWWW!) Good idea though. My description didn't really explain well.

I'm wondering if he is stressed about something.

Could it be what they call a "hot spot"? My neighbor's dog gets them, and they have to cone him... Crying or Very sad

We were wondering about that. He hasn't lost any hair (yet). We've threatened him with a cone. Today, he hasn't gone after his tail. Maybe he needed to hear "CONE."

Could it be a chigger buried itself under there? Or allergies? Allergies show up as itchy skin in dogs instead of sneezing like us. My Nicki Sue had allergies and would chew herself practically raw every summer before I got meds for her allergies.

And from my own reactions lately, I'd say allergy season is VERY bad right now.

The vet recommended trying Benadryl for a few days to see if it helps. If it doesn't, he gets to go for a visit to see if there's something on his tail. I don't know if it's a chigger. I haven't got any, and I go in more tall, wet grass than Bingo. He's pretty prissy. Smile

Hope the benedryl works....I know he probably won't like being poked and prodded at the vets office.

It seems to be helping. We aren't at complete relief yet, but he isn't constantly licking and scratching. We'll continue for a couple days to see if the meds build up to help. Fingers crossed! He is enjoying the cheese and hot dog pieces that we shove the pills into. Smile

Benadryl does calm them when they have anxiety, so whether it's allergies or something in his little noggin' I can understand why it seems to be helping. Wes gave the dogs a half of a children's Benadryl the first day of the drive to AZ to quell their uneasiness.

He still had plenty of energy to walk a 5K at the park today. He seemed very happy. Still a little itchy now that he's home, but I think it's much better. He isn't keeping me up at night now.

I bought some anti itch spray and some flea pills at Petco today. I still haven't seen any fleas, but the stuff sounds pretty safe when I read the label, so I decided it couldn't hurt. The spray will help no matter what the cause. So far, we have a quietly sleeping dog.

Yup... The spray is magic. I don't know if the flea stuff worked or not, but when he starts going after his tail, I spray and he gets hours of relief. He slept all night! cheers

Petco Anti-Itch Spray. Two thumbs and some paws up here. I haven't seen him scratch or bite at his tail at all today. I think the problem might be solved. Thanks, everyone, for helping me to narrow down things and get my puppers comfortable.

Ahhhh...allergies. You found the combination Bingo needed to be comfy with allergy season, thank heavens. After the first hard frost you should be able to cut back or eliminate it until next spring.

He really needs a bath too. He's starting to have that special doggy smell. So, when we take him for that, we'll ask for something to help itchy skin/tails.

Hope they have something that will help with that. Otherwise, keep up the allergy pills and stuff until the first hard killing frost.

We'll do that anyway. It seems to help with the sneezing too.

A bit better. We're trying a new kind of food. So far, lamb and oatmeal food seems to be best.
