Up until today we had managed to make it through the winter without any pipes breaking.
Today the line to the ice machine froze and the broke. UGH!!! No

I know, hopefully the plumber will be here when he says he will and
we be able to open for lunch.

OhNo, I can easily imagine the mess that made when the pipe thawed.

With the water turned off overnight I don't think it was too bad underneath the
house. The plumber was actually early. He was supposed to be here at nine
and he was here around 8.30. Finished in time and we were able to open for
lunch.

Very cool! I have a friend who is replacing her laundry room because of burst pipes. It's so good that you turned off the water. We left ours dripping last night to prevent freezes. So far, no crises here.

Hope it stays that way for you. One of my upstairs neighbors water heater went
out. It was caught before something major happened.

I remember living in my trailer, about six months before I moved where I am now. Ex crawled underneath while I was at work (in January) and shut the water off. Pipes completely frozen when I got home. HUGE flood when they thawed since several pipes split: ruined several boxes of books I had packed already, ruined the flooring, a rug, my end table, and the wooden couch. I could have killed him! Had to live without running water until I moved (my yard was the only yard with NO snow on it)...no way was I paying to replace ALL the plumbing just before moving out. Just melted snow for showers and toilet, carried water home in jugs from mom's for drinking and cooking. Gave me great respect for great-grandma......hauling water from the well, heating water on a woodburning stove, etc. for a family of 11.

I am facing possible eviction when I can't pay the market rate rent on my apartment. Why is it being raised to that amount (300x what I get to live on at the moment) when my income dropped because school is out for the summer? My landlord can't get anyone at the local LINK office to answer the #$@%! phone to get verifications that I receive no money from them, only food stamps and a medical card. Their fax machine must be on the fritz since it doesn't answer at all either.

I can't get through on the phone despite multiple numbers to try....even the ones to report a change on. 1-800 main number doesn't answer either. I have no money for gas or I'd drive down there and get in their faces over this (and I nearly got t-boned at that damned roundabout they put in at the intersection you turn down to get to that office.) I'm so mad at our governments love affair with computerized phone answering machines and the endless menus I could spit nails!!! And then use those nails to nail their miserable lazy hides to the wall!!!  Soapbox

Stepping off my soapbox now......

Re: Crisis...anyone?

Post by fiffur on Wed Jul 09, 2014 12:13 pm

The email worked.  Now for the next possible crisis: we have a 3 DAY STATE INSPECTION next week.  We've never had one of those in all the years I've lived there.  I'm dreading it: I know we won't pass because of the owner and manager not keeping the place up.  I have a sinking feeling they're going to yank the funding and we'll all have to move out within a month or they're going to shut the place down asap and we'll only get 24 hours to move out.
I've packed a lot already (the storage rooms are full of boxes now) but it will take me longer than that to pack the rest up, find a storage unit big enough, two guys and a truck to move it all with, and borrow the money to pay them!

Please pray we pass so I won't be homeless for the next 3-9 months (when my name finally comes to the top of the waiting list elsewhere). I don't want to be homeless for the hottest part of summer or next winter.

Yikes! If the inspection failures work like they do here, the government finds alternate (not usually good) places for the people to go while the failed place either gets fixed up or torn down. Hopefully, they'll squeak by.

The nearest alternate places where there MIGHT be openings are either in Rockford or Beloit. Both in very bad neighborhoods where shootings are a daily, sometimes hourly, event and far too far away for my job. I will NOT move there and lose this job.

I'm hoping that if we don't pass the state will take over managing the place (at least temporarily--I've heard they do that sometimes), kick the managers out, and fix up the place. Then we won't have to move. I'm no longer #5 on the waiting list to move, I've been bumped to #17...and if any more over 60 yr old people sign up I'll be even lower on the list than that.  Sad  I was so hoping to be out of this hellhole before winter.

The managers haven't even so much as mowed the lawn, and it needs it! Hallways are filthy, so is the carpet. NOTHING has been fixed. Parking lot is still not done. It's as if they've given up. Landlady claims she gets excuses why the repair crew hasn't shown up yet. She's beyond frustrated. I don't blame her, but if they shut this place down she'll just get transferred. No worries about a roof over her head like the rest of us.

Landlady said we passed but my mom's manager said we won't know that for sure for a few more weeks. A manager never knows if they passed until the results are tabulated at the head office.
I have a feeling since they didn't repave the parking lot, mow the lawn, or clean a single thing in the place that we ultimately won't pass and they'll be given a list of stuff that is supposed to be done. Then another inspection to see if they actually did anything.

I swear they should put in a revolving door on my place. We have at least 3 inspections every summer.

If only I could show you a pic......landlord mowed the back lawn finally......and left the thistle patch as well as knee to waist high weeds around every single tree. Skipped quite a bit of the corners of the lawn too. Talk about a half-@$$ed job. No wonder we have so many failed inspections. Hallways need a major cleaning and repainting, carpet too. Stairs are crumbling, a 1 x 12 for a railing (try hanging onto that when you're falling), half the lights are burned out. Siding missing and spray painted over (obvious too), bad lawn care, multiple dead trees threatening to fall onto the buildings, spray painted the parking lot rather than actually fix the potholes, cracks, sinkholes and drains. The only thing that passed that I know of was the paperwork: only because she backdates everything to make it look like it was done on time.

Any wonder why I want to get out of there so badly?

Mom's manager said they haven't even gotten their results yet, and their inspection was two months ago.
