Re: BobCat & Co.

We're having some minor (but annoying) jealousy issues between our three critters. In the last 6 months or so, Bobby has finally had it with the dogs demanding (and getting) all the attention, so he's been asserting himself by coming up on laps even if the dogs ARE sitting there, and talking more when he doesn't get his fair share. I mean, I can't even play with him with the laser pointer without Argo joining in. I've never seen a dog chase a laser pointer before! Lately, I've even shut myself in the bathroom with Bob where we can play in peace - but Lyra bangs on the door if she knows what we're up to in there! Sometimes we sit in there and I shoot hair ties into the bath tub and Bobby leaps to catch them.

At any rate, they all seem to want all the attention all the time. It's hard when there are two humans and three animals! Argo has just begun a very unpleasant habit that I believe is trying to "claim" me as his. I have on my couch two throw pillows, and if I don't pick them up and put them on the back of the couch in the morning, I'll come home to find he's "marked" the pillow on the spot where I sit on the couch. affraid It's funny (not really) because he's more Wesley's dog and Lyra's more my dog, but Argo and Bobby have recently both wanted to pile on top of me at the same time for attention. Remember, I've always been Bobby's human. He loves me so much and wants me to hold him and hug him all the time. I think this is a message to Bobby that he wants me to be his human. Maybe he wants to find a place in the pecking order. I don't know what it is, but I keep telling him that he's going to feel the toe of my boot if he keeps it up! Lyra is self-confident enough to be able to share a place with Bob fairly easily.

Thankfully, our throw pillows can be "thrown" in the washing machine! But we need to nip this rivalry (if that's what it really is) in the bud. Some people I talk to on a Papillon forum think I need to give Argo lots of attention to make him feel less insecure. In my own head that seems like giving in or rewarding bad behavior, but I suppose it's not, if indeed there is a feeling of insecurity involved. Whatever is going on, it has to stop. Exclamation

I can ask a friend whose sister has raised a bunch of Papillons. If she (my friend) has not left for her work trip, she will probably have some advice this weekend. I hope this clears up -- whatever the cause.

Thanks! I'm giving Argo more attention, though in my defense, I think he got plenty to begin with! But I suppose, just like some kids need more affirmation from their folks, maybe Argo does too... He really is the most endearing little boy.

And it could be boy-boy 'sibling' rivalry going on. But, whatever works to bring peace works.

That could very well be, Fif. I've always wondered if the "boys will be boys" attitude spanned the different species. I have no idea. Funny when I think about it, because Wesley often refers to battles between males as "having a pissing contest." LOL! Truer words were never spoken, if this is the case! Thank heaven Bob hasn't stooped to Argo's level, or I'd be in trouble! affraid

Lyra doesn't seem to be involved in this particular issue at all.

With horses it's a "pooping contest." Boy horses will poop on top of each other's piles to dominate a spot. Neutral

OhLord, I sure hope that doesn't happen with Argo and Bobbie......

I wonder if the vet would have any advice on how to deal with this kind of 'sibling' rivalry.

If they start that, they'll BOTH feel the toe of my boot! Just kidding...kinda. Funny thing is that they all live together quite nicely. I just think they both want to claim me as theirs.

Today is Argo & Lyra's 5th birthday. Do you believe they're 5??? You can read about their big birthday festivities on my blog. I think they had a good birthday.

I mentioned this on the birthday board, but I thought I'd resurrect this topic because my little ones are spending their 6th birthdays on a big adventure with their Daddy. The three of them are officially moving to the new house in AZ as I type this. They spent the first night in Springfield, MO, and will lay their little heads down tonight in Amarillo, TX. They seem to be doing fairly well with the long drive so far. Will keep you posted.

They're 240 miles from Amarillo right now, and doing fine. And yes, the house is REALLY quiet without them... Bobby's getting LOTS of hugs!

I didn't know that Bobby didn't go on this trip. I can imagine, and he must wonder where his housemates are.

No, we decided to divide and conquer where the pets were concerned. I'll take Bobby when the time comes. I'll also probably drive with my brother and then fly him back home later, so I can have a second driver. It's over 1700 miles from door to door, and that would be tough for me. Wesley has done big trips like this on his own before.

Long drives are SO boring. Definitely bring a friend (or brother).

Glad to hear the pets are doing well. Moving is so weird for them. Do they have their favorite pillows with them? Smile

I'm sure Bobby doesn't mind the extra hugs. He knows something major is up with all the packing, the puppers and daddy gone, etc.

We made sure to send them with favorite dog beds, and also sent "Baby" along with Wes. Baby is Lyra's Beanie Baby cat (officially named Chip) who is a tri-color kitty BB. She loves that Beanie, and takes it to bed with her every night. You can tell when she's getting tired at night, because that's when Baby makes an appearance in the living room. Lyra also brings out Baby when visitors come to the house. Baby comes along when they greet the company. Wes is under strict orders not to leave Baby behind at any of the hotels because Lyra would be bereft without it.
