You're right. A lot of real ugly situations can be avoided if that commend was a
part of every dog owners vocabulary.

Yep - STOP and LEAVE IT can both be very useful. If they're doing anything they shouldn't be, from barking too much to bugging the cat to focusing on another dog when they shouldn't to picking up something they find on the ground and trying to eat it on our walks, one or the other of those commands can work very well.

I agree Bobcat, my sis' pup Maggie knows Stop and Leave It very well. Keeps her from picking up anything on their walks. We even booby-trapped their walking route to teach her that one. Very useful, even at home.

It's kept Bingo out of the horse and cat food.

He's really getting to be a GOOD dog. Today, he was asleep at the foot of our bed. This is the first time we've seen him in there for more than a quick visit. He's also gone 2 days without snoodling the litter box. We weren't home to tell him LEAVE IT, so he has just decided to be a really good doggie. I hope he decides to stay good after his bath on Saturday. Smile

That's great, Becky. I'm glad he's so trustworthy. I've always crate
trained mine.

He probably could be crate trained. It would be an enormous crate though. He's largish, and I couldn't ask him to stay hunkered down in a medium crate all day. Our plan is to get a run for nice weather since he seems to like outside when it's dry. We'll back it up to the storage barn so he can go inside if the weather gets bad and have some nice, dry hay to sleep in.

That sounds like a great idea. A dog run. Far better than a crate. I mean you would
need at least what they call a four hundred. I think there is a larger one but I'm not
sure.

The barn/run idea seems much nicer....more room to run and more to see.

Ask, Gretchen for some ideas to make escape proof. Sometimes
hounds like to go a wandering.

Good plan. So far, he has only wandered to the far reaches of the big pasture, but I have a feeling he'll want to go walk about when the weather is nicer.

That's where "Leave it!" comes so in handy.Smile

He went to PetSmart today for a bath. GOOD DOG! The only part he didn't like was getting his claws ground. He's never experienced it before, and he was a little scared. He will get some Rescue Remedy before his next visit so he can relax a little. I'm surprised at how much better looks all clean.

Re: Bingo found a home

Post by bpaquet on Fri Feb 14, 2014 10:46 am

Surprisingly, he likes being clean. He licks his paws when he comes in kind of like a cat. He also HATES getting rained/snowed on. He goes out and just shakes and shakes to keep the wet off. He might like a pool in the summer, but this mud and wet are just not for him.

We've decided that we'll have to put down puppy pads. He tries really hard not to go in the house, but sometimes we get stuck in traffic, and accidents happen. He always goes in the same place, so we're going to put pads there. I'm thinking of using one as a target on our walk today so he'll get the idea of peeing on it. I don't want to encourage peeing in the house, but sometimes he just can't hold it any more. Any suggestions for training to the pads?

I'm sure he would crate since he was in a cage at the shelter, and did very well. The problem is crate size. We just don't have space big enough for a crate the size he needs. If we get the regular large crate, he can stand, but he would end up knocking over water. We just don't have space to safely set up an extra large crate because entrances would be blocked. So, we need to come up with a different solution until the weather allows us to set up that run.

Bad mom! I left the bag of dog treats within Mouski reach. He knocked the bag on the ground and Bingo (probably with help from the kitten) ate the entire bag. I swear he looks bloated and fat.  Razz Extra walks tonight. He got a smaller dinner. Now, he's sleeping off his snack.

ROTFL Familiar with that scenario. I have had cats that would knock food off the counter
that they didn't like Chancey thought it was wonderful.

ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL  That is too funny! I can picture Bingo whispering to Mouski....."Pssst. See that bag up there? Could you knock it down here where I can reach it? I'll share if you do it for me."

Today, I bought carpet shampoo (Nature's Miracle) and some dog deterrent. I hope it keeps Bingo from marking the spots where he's peeing in the house. He was a good dog today. No accidents and no treat stealing.

It's a cleaner and a very effective one. A little goes a long way. You can only get
on line and it's not cheap but worth every penny of it. I ordered mine from the Cat
Faeries.
