The land itself is so beautiful; I'd totally go there for a peaceful week to relax, read in the sun, walk & picnic in the fields, and toast the sunset with a bottle of wine. Real farm atmosphere with chickens, sweet (healthy!) barn cats & happy dogs, maybe a sheep or two ... it wouldn't take much. You'd make a great manager of such a place, Bob, and a fine "mine host" too! Very Happy

Well, it's early days yet to see what happens to the farm. Too bad Dave doesn't seem to know what he wants to make of the place, or even thinking about it. But any way you look at it, you've come a long way from that stuffy government office, haven't you, dear friend? And thank God for that! pirat

Your idea sounds great. I think you're so right about the horses too. It's too much to keep horses AND try to run a vacation spot. You'd end up shorting either the guests or horses. They are better off at their new homes.

Here's to dreams!

Well the two kittens are doing well and have now climbed out of their pen and are mucking in with the remaining Chihuahuas.

These were taken about two weeks ago.

These were taken last week (sorry about the quality).

And the almost obligatory shot of the girls in the river Wyre.

How oft, in spirit, have I turned to thee,
O sylvan Wye! thou wanderer thro' the woods,
How often has my spirit turned to thee!

As an English teacher, I've gotta love the Wye. Beautiful picture!

Beautiful sentiments, but it's the river wyRe the girls are paddling in. The Wye is in the south of England. I agree it is a beautiful river though.

Very nice photos. The kitties are priceless and the fun in the WyRe picture is just great. It doesn't look very warm though. Did the girls need to warm up after their splashing?

How do you pronounce Wyre? Is it "wire", "why-r", "where"?

We had our Wye here in the States. It was a tree though. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wye_Oak. We pronounced that "Way Oak" when I lived in Maryland, but I have no idea if we were saying it correctly.

LOVED the pics Bob. Thanks for sending them. I would take those two kits in a heartbeat if my landlord would say yes, and I could afford the cost of vet bills, litter, etc.

It was a very hot day which is why I took them there so they were fine. Although it's not far from the farm, a quick towelling before they got in the car and they were dry by the time we got back.

It's pronounced as in wire. It is a beautiful river and during dry weather not over deep so I feel safe letting the girls go in. When we've had heavy rain it gets a bit torrential so I keep them away.

It sounds like a wonderful day. I love a nice dip in a river on a hot day. I'm sure the dogs were very grateful for the adventure. And we all know how labs LOVE water. Very Happy

Well the kittens have gone to a new home ie with Dave's lady friend. At least I know they'll be cared for properly and be spayed and neutered. The Tabby is a boy and the black kit is a girl.
However. While walking to the back of the barn the other day I heard a noise from one of the, temporarily unused, wooden stables. It's in full use now as one of the cats has had 6 kittens in there. All their eyes are open and they hiss at you if you go near them. 5 black kitties and one tabby.
In fairness to them, they've never seen a human before so all they see is this great lumbering idiot coming towards them.
We've started putting food in for them and talking to them as we do it so hopefully we can gain their trust. The momma cat is coming into the dog room and getting her feed with the other cats, then hopping over the gate and going to her babies.
Dave wants to get them into the dog room if he can and try to socialise them properly. Good luck on that one. lol

5 blackies and one tabby? sounds like the Rescue Kitties! though only 4 blacks here...5 if you included the Judy. I hope they get socialized and get some nice homes;)

Well, well. If the kits went home with Dave's paramour, and she's willing to get them both fixed, she must not be all bad. Any new thoughts on that situation?

But now a new load of kittens! Hoo! Hissy, too. How socialized is their mama? Will she let you sit down and lure the kits into your lap?

What I've had to do with the feral babies is catch them, cage them, and then handle them (sometimes wearing gloves) for lots of short periods each day. If they're 8-9 weeks or younger, I can quickly get to the stage where they'll let me scruff them and pick them up if I let them see the hand coming. I then put them in my lap and pet and groom them. Usually one tames up faster than the rest, and once I get a purrer, I pair him up with the more timid ones. Sometimes I can get 3 or 4 of them purring up a storm. Oddly enough, the kittens that have to be bathed tame faster. They're usually too young for flea treatments, so I have to soak them in soapy (mild pet shampoo) water to drown the fleas, then towel dry them and pick off the dead fleas with tweezers. Once they've survived that, they tame pretty quickly. I call it "The Kitten Stockholm Syndrome."

Re: Farm update.

i think you need to send that tip into some of those cat sites!
i thought that teaching a kitty to get its nails trimmed and to walk on a leash was a good thing...but seems the rescue people around here won't even tell potential adopters that a kitty can walk on a leash. they have some massive 'thing' about letting a cat outside even if its in a walker type thing (cuz i've always wanted to get one of those stroller things so the kitties cold get some fresh air). they say if a cat goes outside it will start howling by the door to go out and people will let them out. (geez, how stupid do they think humans are?)
i think the more socialation the better! (and i really like the idea about the fleas...i never thought about having to pick the dead ones off! i used to have to pick live ones off kittens when i was on the farm).

I am glad those two lil kits found a good loving home Bob. Now to socialize the new batch and then find homes. If mom will let you handle her, chances are good that it won't take very long for the kits to let you too. As long as they can see MOM is letting you hold and touch her, they will follow her example.

Re: Farm update.

Post by Bob on Wed Aug 10, 2011 2:29 pm

Good grief. I can't believe it was last June that I did an update. Well here goes.

Pol and Pippa continue in good health. The four Golden Retrievers are still consigned to the stable (where they will remain until I can get a house again). They too are nice and healthy and I get them out onto the paddock with my girls every couple of hours or so. In a way it's better as I can keep an eye on them.
We found six kittens in one of the wooden stables a few weeks back. The stables don't get used so never get bothered with. Three of them have gone to new homes and the other three are living in one of the unused polytunnels. Pol and Pippa are intrigued by them and watch as they eat the food I put down for them.

Dave is of the opinion that three more cats around the place won't do any harm. I (and others) can't get it into his thick head that if they are female he'll have a lot more trouble than just three more cats. I'm still working on him over getting them spayed.
Portia has had another three kittens. Two were stillborn but the third, a little tabby, is doing well.
All of the swallows around the place have now fledged and are swooping about getting ready to depart for warmer climes.
These were the last ones to fly.

The muscovy duck (in spite of laying 15 eggs) has only two ducklings. They have been well looked after and are living in the lagoon quite close to the wooden stables the kittens were born in.

On a sadder note I found a little pipistrelle bat near one of the stables yesterday. Puddle, the youngest of the Goldies, grabbed it and I managed to get her to drop it. I put it on one of the ledges out of the sunlight hoping that it would fly away last night. Unfortunately my little batty friend hasn't bothered to go anywhere and died this afternoon.
Apologies for the blurred quality of the pics. I have some more on the camera, but getting the right focus isn't easy.

Such a sweet little thing.

oh poor batty but you tried, bob. those things are hard to save esp when they're so tiny.
of course i love the kitties;) the one sticking his tongue out in the middle picture looks a lot like a young Toothpick. I love how their tails curl...the Rescue Kitties get that when they're happily eating as well.
creepy and weird thing...in the first picture of the ducks i didn't know what it was. i swore it was a drown girl floating in the water! (the tail looks like a head/face, the body the girl's body and some feathers look like an arm/hand).
gawd, i knew i'd had a hard/bad day today but not that bad Rolling Eyes

Wow! Lots going on. I hope you can get the little kitties spayed. I'll be sending "fixing" thoughts your way.

The batty was adorable. I found one in my barn once. It recovered. I have no idea what got to it, but I guess it was lucky.

Glad to hear the updates.

Re: Farm update.

Post by Bob on Fri Aug 12, 2011 4:36 am

In my rush to get the updates out I forgot these.
Bunty, one of the chihuahuas started to put on weight, but only over her shoulders and upper body. I told Dave who checked her and said she was fine. Then two weeks ago she started to put on weight over the rest of her body too. I insisted that there was something definitely wrong and Beryl and I took her to see the vet. The vet told us to keep an eye on her and if she got worse to bring her back. Well she did get worse. Dave phoned thevet, and told us that the vet had said keep an eye on her until morning. I pointed out that I didn't think she would be alive in the morning so begrudgingly he agreed to take her back. This was 10:30 at night. The vet said that, yes she had gone worse and that she thought it might be that she would need spaying. She was going to do it right away so we agreed to leave her. We decided that if it was spaying that she needed that the vet should just go ahead with it, but anything else she would phone beforehand and see what we wanted to do. We got a phone call at 1 am to say that there was nothing wrong with her ovaries and that her spleen was slightly distorted, but that she may have been born like that. Anyhow we went to collect her the next morning. After the exploratory op and a course of antibiotics and antiinflamatory drugs she is back to her old self. Incredible.
The other piece of news is that one of the turkeys has hatched a chick and has been put into one of the dog runs to keep her and it safe from predators. She had two chick a couple of weeks ago and the magpies or crows got them.
Photo's to follow.
