Maddie and Roddy

Post by gbste on Fri Nov 01, 2013 5:02 pm

Monday I got an email from a woman in Las Animas. I'm trying to help her with a cat situation at her father's house, but this message was about 2 puppies that had been dumped in a lot near their home. I was able to get them into our rescue, and Kevin and I picked them up after school yesterday. Since it was Halloween, we named them after Madeline and Roderick Usher. Below is the link to their Petfinder pages.

Whatncomplete cuties. They sound like they are almost all the way housebroken even at such a young age. Way to go, kids!

They have peed in their crate at night twice.  It's a big crate (Andre slept in it), so I crammed a little cat crate into the back of it to make it smaller for them, and that should help.  They get out in the middle of the night, so they aren't in there too long.  I think they go over and take big drinks when they're out, so maybe I'll pick up the water bucket during their midnight outing too.

They are extremely sweet and funny, and Maddie has discovered a tennis ball that she dearly loves.

I think puppies are a lot like kids in that respect. Some can handle the before bed drink, and others not so much. Smile Good luck!

Evening water restrictions seem to have solved the crate wetting problem. The pups have learned to sit, and when they come running in the back door, they will try to switch from a full out gallop to a sit without slowing down first. They are so funny sliding across the floor. They know how to kennel up, and they are very enthusiastic about the treats they earn for these behaviors.

There is a petfair today, but the pups stayed home. They've only had one combo shot, no booster yet. SCARF has been transporting shelter dogs in our van, and some more went up today. There was a puppy that died of parvo in the shelter recently, and we didn't want to risk the health of the babies by putting them in the van with dogs that had been exposed to parvo. Maddie has a good application, but we will plan on driving her up next week if the potential adopter is still interested. I spoke with the woman on the phone last night, and she is very understanding.

I'm sure she was also glad you didn't want to expose her to parvo too. Shows you care what happens to the babes in your care. If she really wants Maddie she'll wait for her to get to her safely.

Better safe than sorry, right? Parvo is such a scary thing even if dogs have vaccines.

Well, the people with the good app drove all the way down here with their beautiful 9 year old great dane to meet Maddie. All went well, and they adopted her, and will get her to the vet for her booster shot when it is due. Roddy is doing well. We set him up in a smaller crate that we can have in the living room when we're watching tv and stuff in the evening, and move into the bedroom with us when we go to sleep. We will work on getting him and our dogs introduced and used to one another as well.

Roddy has become an expert "sitter," and is working hard on "fetch." I had to pick him up a little doggie coat at our pet pantry because it is so cold in the morning and at night when he has to go outside. It's a cute little coat, and he doesn't try to get it off. I have to roll back the hood that's on it, as it makes it hard for him to see where he's going.

Heehee! My parents' chi mix, Peanut, has a coat like that. I'm sure Roddy is just adorable in his new duds.

He likes to enjoy the tennis ball for a minute before he brings it back, but he does bring it back.

When he's being very alert, his ears touch over the center of his head. Too cute.

Remember the head piece that Sally Field's wore in the Flying Nun.
When I look at those photos that's all I can think of.
