A Growltiger kitten

Post by gbste on Tue Oct 01, 2013 1:16 pm

On Friday, I picked up a little kitten (because, you know, I'm short on cats) from a friend who found it in the alley behind our local newspaper office. He's a tiny (4-5 weeks old), skinny little guy, and he's pretty feral. He was very weak at first, and would not eat, so I syringe fed him some formula and some Pedialyte. He got much stronger, and on Saturday he started eating very small amounts of kitten Fancy Feast. On Sunday, he started really scarfing down the wet food. He's hilarious when he eats. He growls and cusses the whole time, but he has been tearing it up with his food. He had some trouble digesting the formula, but he's doing much better on the canned food. Last night I put him into a bigger carrier and he has some Kitten Chow and some water available to him all the time. Kevin gives him his Fancy Feast lunch while I'm at work, and I give him his meds (Amoxicillin for his runny eyes, Albon for his tummy), his breakfast, dinner, and midnight snack. We're pretty sure he will make it now, so he needs a name. (Kevin nixed Growltiger as we're hoping he'll get over that behavior.) He's a dsh, grey and white, and is very opinionated. If anyone here is inspired, I would really appreciate name suggestions. I will work on getting some pictures of him this evening so you all can see what he looks like. I may even get a video of him eating his dinner. We'll see if the camera gods smile on me or not.

Perhaps "Bravo" might be tuff-boy & heroic enough for our new fella, yet more ambiguous than Growltiger:

[verse 1 from Growltiger's Last Stand:]

Growltiger was a Bravo Cat, who lived upon a barge;
In fact he was the roughest cat that ever roamed at large.
From Gravesend up to Oxford he pursued his evil aims,
Rejoicing in his title of "The Terror of the Thames."

I'd love to see pics of this tough lil fighter! How about Alexander? It means "fighter, warrior" As in Alexander the Great, this lil guy is trying to be a tough guy. I read once that Alexander the Great was a small person physically, but big in personality and intelligence.

Fiffur, I meant to send you a picture last night, but my internet connection was being difficult. I'll try again this evening, unless I can get a copy saved and sent from here.

Both of these names sound good to me. I'll try calling him both and see which one "fits" him better.

So tiny, and so adorable! (thanks so much for the pics!)
Which name did he seem to like? And did he let you know with growls or purrs?

Right now I'm calling him Eliot G. Alexander.  He still likes to growl.  He's making some friends here. Mr. Tony Rings cleaned him up a little.

Still growling? Our little one hardly makes any noise, although I've heard a good-sized purr. No growling yet.

Today I'm pretty sure we saw Eliot's sibling and mama, plus an aunt or uncle, I think. They were in the alley where he was found. They ran off, but not too far away. We had some cat food with us (of course), so I put some of that out, and they came pretty close, but I was unable to catch any them. The baby looks almost exactly like Eliot, as does the mama. They may not be all that feral, as I was able to stand fairly close to them while they ate the food. We will keep an eye out, feed them if we see them, and work on catching at least the kitten.

We fed Eliot's sibling and mama yesterday. I didn't have time to try and catch them, as I had to get back to school for parent/teacher conferences. We'll see what happens this afternoon.

Eliot gets to meet the vet in a little while. I think he's old enough for his first vaccination. I have vaccine here, but he's so small, I just can't bring myself to stick him. Time to rely on the professionals.
