Had to say goodbye to Abby

Post by gbste on Mon Sep 23, 2013 10:43 am

Abby was a schnauzer cross, and a typical terrier in many ways. She defended her home and people tenaciously, whether we needed it or not. She would not tolerate other female dogs, but was a benevolent dictator toward the boys. Abby could be trusted off leash (if no other female dogs were present), was wonderful in the house, and was absolutely loyal and loving to her people. She watched us every waking minute of her life looking for clues about what we would do next so that she could be right there with us when we made our move.

For the last few weeks the vet has been treating her on and off for gastritis. She would lose her appetite and have bouts of vomiting, but the treatment made her feel better. On Friday evening, she didn't want her dinner. On Saturday morning, she wouldn't eat her breakfast. She was drinking lots of water, and then vomiting it all up. Our own vet doesn't work on Saturdays any more, so we took her to the vet who works with our rescue. He too treated her for gastritis and gave us some Albon to give her. She seemed better Saturday night and Sunday morning, but she suddenly started to get weaker and weaker Sunday night. We were giving her small amounts of Pedialyte every few minutes, and she would hobble to the water dish from time to time. By late Sunday night she couldn't walk and was having trouble breathing. She had attacks of bloody diarrhea, and couldn't swallow any liquids. She passed early this morning with her humans and doggy brothers nearby. Kevin is taking her in to the vet this morning for a necropsy. We suspect that her stomach troubles may have been due to a cancer instead of simple gastritis. We want to be sure that she didn't have anything the other pups can catch.

I'm so sorry you lost Abby. Her issues sound very similar to Archimedes'. He did have intestinal cancer.

Hugs to you.

The vet says she had hemorrhagic bowel syndrome, and that he every once in a while will see a rash of cases. He says that the cause is pretty much unknown, but it could be a virus.

I've never heard of that condition before. A virus? How do you protect everybody else from that?

No one is really sure if there is a virus, or what that virus would be. None of the other dogs is sick, thank heavens.

It sounds very strange that the vet sees rashes of it. I'd suspect something like that myself. Maybe it's something older doggies are more susceptible to. No knowing since the vets aren't sure.

I'm glad you found out what it was and that no one else is ill. It's hard enough to lose one special one without having to worry about the others at the same time.

True Becky. And you also know there wasn't much that could've been done to prevent Abby's condition either. Still makes it hard though, the heart doesn't think or reason, it only feels.

The only connection the vet has seen here is that many of the dogs who get this condition are eating Beneful dog food. Abby did not ever get that brand, however.
