Gandalf the Grey

Post by gbste on Fri Jul 12, 2013 1:34 pm

On Tuesday morning as I was running around getting the kitten transport going, I discovered this lovely cat in my garage.  His right eye looked really bad, but I had to go, so I cleaned it out and gave him a hit of Amoxi, arranged for another volunteer to make sure he had plenty of food, and took off with the 10 rescued kittens.  He was here when I got back on Wednesday, so I repeated the treatment.  His eye was still bad yesterday, so I got him a vet appointment for this morning.  The eye has a terrible ulcer, but he got an injection of antibiotic plus B12 and some eye drops.  I need to put drops in several times a day.  Luckily, he's a good patient and will tolerate being handled, especially once he sees the can of food:roll: .   We already have neighborhood cat Dorian Grey (when I first saw the new cat, I thought it was Dorian), and our much-loved Earl Grey passed last year.  This kitty is now known as Gandalf the Grey.

I'd love to see a pic of this Gandalf. I hope that ulcer heals without scarring so his vision isn't impared. How old do you think he is?

He's fully grown. He doesn't seem that old to me, but I'd say he's at least a year old, maybe two or three.

Poor Gandalf...that eye looks terrible.

He is so friendly so I am guessing he was probably not a stray but dumped by people who no longer wanted him.

Or just a nice guy. I've met male cats who were like that, utterly accepting.

I faithfully put drops in his eye 4 times today. Tomorrow I have to be gone all day for the petfair, but I'll get some drops in at least twice. That ulcer is really big, and it's right in the center of his eye. I'm hoping he doesn't lose the eye. He's so nice about allowing me to work on that sore eye.

He's gorgeous. And, what a wonderful name. I think the vets must be hopeful about his eye since they didn't say that it had to come out right away. It's amazing how things can heal. I've dealt with a few horse eye injuries that I was sure were devastating. All healed, and some with no apparent effect on vision. So, I have high hopes for Gandalf. Smile

I have high hopes for him too. He seems like such a nice kitty, how anybody could dump him is beyond me. I hope that eye heals well with no loss of vision, or without loss of the eye itself. Love the name, he looks like he has the wisdom of the ages in his face.

He's a nice kitty, and he has a very tiny, sweet meow.

He only got drops twice today because I had to do the petfair all day, but I'll get drops in 4-5 times a day from now on.

Gandalf's eye is much better this morning. It still needs lots of healing, but it is improving. This morning I noticed that his "good" eye has an odd pupil. It looks like an upside down triangle.

Very good news! I noticed the pupil in the picture. I thought it was just the way the lid was. That's cool. Smile

That IS unusual, I've never seen a kitty pupil like that before. Gandalf is really one of a kind. Glad the eye is healing. Wish I could hear that tiny sweet meow he has.

This morning Dorian came around to the back when I was feeding Gandalf. Gandi totally freaked out, and ran away hissing, spitting, and cussing. Dorian just stood there looking innocent. I put Gandalf's food out in the garage, then gave some canned food to Dorian away from the garage. Gandalf ate ok, and Dorian was happy to have the extra canned food, as he'd already had his breakfast on the front porch.

The only thing that worries me about this is that D got extra canned food for interrupting G's feeding, however innocently.  As long as he doesn't decide keep this up as a sweet deal Drooly , we should be fine!

Dorian has not been out back since that one incident. He has other people who feed him, I think, so he doesn't need to double up here. Gandalf's eye is much better. It's open almost all the way, and the ulcer is much smaller. He's a very sweet kitty and always comes when he's called.

Gandalf loves hugs, so I'll share yours with him, Fiff.

His eye is much better. The ulcer is almost cleared up, his pupil works, and I can see that the original problem was probably a couple of scratches on the cornea. The pupil on his left eye seems to be "blown out" on one side, and it doesn't get bigger or smaller.

Sounds like he got in a nasty fight. The left pupil thing is really odd. Maybe he got a scratch there, and has some scar tissue?
