Wish I could use something like that, the floodwater mosquitoes here will get you no matter what time of day or night it is. Dawn or dusk doesn't matter, they're out 24/7 and hungry. Got bit two more times just walking across 50 yards of unmowed lawn to mom's yesterday afternoon early.

I squeezed in a ride between rain showers. I tied dryer sheets in Kina's mane and tail and tucked some in the bra straps. We had far fewer flying meanies bothering us. I put some in the boys' manes and tails when we were done. Everyone seems to be getting some relief.

Fiff, my husband says he uses the sheets under his hat when he has to work in the woods. They really help. Get yourself a box of the really stinky ones and use them on your adventures through the jungle. Smile

I saw that let me know how it works. Some friends of mine are having trouble
with deer flies.

The sheets work pretty well. The biggest problem is that they seem to slip off manes/tails, so I need to hunt for them in the pasture. Litter isn't something I want all over my place.

Is there anyway you can braid them in.

Is there any ones that repel the skeeters without setting off my asthma (I'm allergic to perfume)? I keep getting bit no matter how fast I run or move to get across the yard. Doesn't help the unmowed grass in my yard is past my knees again.

I found this at Whole Foods it's something called Skeeter Screen. Works very well.

I'm not sure about no allergy kinds. I'm fortunate and don't have allergies. The absolute best mosquito repellant is DEET, but it is poison.

No riding today. Farrier day is Wednesday, and Kina's shoes are loose. Don't want to lose one before it gets reset. Envoy was really hot and sweaty. So, I cleaned stalls and gave horse showers. There was plenty to do in the barn, and by the time I was done, I was all hot and sweaty. I think this will be a good week for doing non-riding things.

I ordered a fly sheet for Kina today. She's just miserable. I think I'm going to turn them out tonight and let them stay in their stalls during the day while it's so hot. The flies are so bad in weather like this. It's been dry for a few days, so the mosquitoes shouldn't be too bad tonight. I'll keep an ear out for running. If they can't take it, they'll come in.

It's been dry here too but the skeeters are just as bad as ever. Poor ponies.......I hope the fly sheet works for Kina.

They were much happier in their stalls during the day. I had the exhaust fan running at the peak of the end of the barn, a big fan in the aisle, and the stall fans all running full blast. It wasn't too bad in there. They were still out on the grass when I called for breakfast. I think this is the way to go for the hot times. The sheet will still help Kina when she has to spend daylight hours outside while we clean stalls. This plan means 2 times/day cleaning, but I can't make the kids suffer.

Today's farrier visit was very good. Kina lost a shoe last night. Smile Timing is everything.

Same here. Hopefully the weather will break and the skeeters and flies will go elsewhere.

The kids are enjoying being inside during the hot days. They are out all night, and sleep during the day with the fans blowing. It sounds like a rocket about to take off with 5 BIG fans running, but I know they don't care. It is about 15 degrees cooler than out in the sun.

Plus with all those fans going a fly or skeeter would have a hard time flying around in the barn.

That's really the reason I have them in. The mosquitoes have given up in the heat, but the flies are extra aggressive. The horses seem happy to spend their days under the fans and their nights outside. I'll keep it up this way until the heat breaks or until we start getting skeeter invasions after some good rain.

Finally got a ride in today. It's been a week because of the heat. Envoy and I had a really nice ride. He was forward for most of it, which is an accomplishment for him. He likes to pull instead of push. Smile So, he trotted nicely, and we had fun until the flies started to bite him. We quit just as the thunder showed up, so the flies' timing was ok.

Glad you two had some fun until the nastiness rolled in again. Sounds like Envoy enjoyed it as much as you did.

No riding today. It's raining. At least we're just getting normal rain. I got POURED on during my drive home. I guess my house is at the edge of the really yucky stuff.

Look out then, you might get the edge of the nastiness that rolled through here last night around 10pm. Suddenly came up with 60-70mph wind blowing, pounding pouring rain and tons of lightening.

Had an awesome ride with Kina today. She was a little slower than usual because it was warm, but once she got going, she was her usual "go go go" self. She had a wonderful canter, which I discovered she loves. She didn't want to stop, but she wasn't running away. GOOD GIRL!

Today was an Envoy day. He was a very good boy. We mostly walked because he has some itchy stuff on his legs. I think he is having a reaction to bug bites. It is Benadryl and oatmeal baths for him this week. Poor guy. He's the biggest one, but the most sensitive.

Sometimes that's the way it goes. He's the big sensitive quiet type. Do they have oral benedryl for ponies?
