Cosette the orphaned tortie

Post by gbste on Sun May 26, 2013 3:51 pm

Yesterday, on the way home from the Petfair, we stopped at the dog pound in Las Animas to pick up a litter of 3 little pups for me to foster. We got the puppies loaded and headed out. Julie, the other SCARF volunteer for the fair, was behind me as her husband picked her during the transfer. Just as I turned on to the highway that runs through Las Animas, a mama cat and her kitten started to run across the road. There was almost no traffic. Everyone going in my direction slowed down to let them by, but a jackass on a motorcycle coming the other way hit the mama cat--I thought deliberately. The baby watched her mama die on the road, then ran into a vacant lot. I stopped the van in the right lane of the highway--there's no shoulder there--Julie and her husband pulled in behind me. We were able to throw a towel over the kitten when she ran into some elm tree weeds. Julie's husband picked up the dead mama. The baby came home with me; the mama at least received a decent burial. Kevin says we should call the kitten Cosette.

Don't worry, Fire Flower, his space there is reserved.

Blessings on poor little Cosette, and may her memory be short. It will be much harder for you, Julie and the hubs to forget, sweetie. I'm so sorry.

She cries for her mama. So far she doesn't take any comfort in human contact. I just don't have a trustworthy kitty to put in with her, or I'd try that. The baby boys are too little to share her space--she's in a big dog crate, and I think they'd get through some of those spaces without too much trouble. She's very interested in Ace, the kitty that lives in that part of the house, but he just wants to reach through the bars and steal her kibble. I take her out several times a day and love on her. She hisses and spits until I get ahold of her, then she just hunkers down and endures, but she'll tame down ok. I just feel bad that she's so lonely.

Sad How dreadful! I wish I could find another stuffed horse to send you. My brother got one for me that is in a curled up position. Every kitten who has come here has loved to use it as a companion. Maybe Cosette would like a stuffed animal for some comfort? I know you'll work wonders with the poor little thing.

I will look for a stuffie for her when we do errands today. It couldn't hurt her to have one.

I almost got her to play last night. She tracked my fingers, and reached her paw almost to mine. Today I'm going to try taking Mr. Tony Rings in to see her. He's usually pretty interested in kittens and kind to them. Maybe they can "hang out" (with supervision, of course.)

I held Cosette and Tony next to each other for a few minutes yesterday. He looked her over and licked her on the head. It's hard to say what she thought, as she was being as quiet and small as possible since the giant human was holding her.

I found a little golden lab stuffed animal that we already had and put that into her crate. I haven't seen her with the doggie, but it has moved around the crate a little, and it didn't move on its own, so she's at least playing with it.

The stuffie was an excellent idea. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

She purred a little when I held her today. She still hisses at me when I pick her up, though.

And of course, this one reminds me of my precious Tortie, Ruby. Wesley brought home Bobby for me not long after I lost Ruby, who was killed by a car. Crying or Very sad

Of course Cosette would show some of her tortitude. At least she purred for you while being held. She's learning not all peoples are bad even if she does still have the memory of the horrible human who ran over her beloved mama. Glad she's taking some comfort from the plushie. You should have seen her playing "Spider Kitten" on the back of the sofa this morning. Too funny.

A kitty plays Spider Kitten by turning on the Velcro toes and running around on the vertical surface of the sofa back.
