Gateway's cardiologist puts a finger on their noses to get them to stop purring for a second. It doesn't always work, but if you want to listen, you could try it. He just puts the side of his finger over the nostrils, and it interrupts the purr.

I've seen vets do that with kitties to stop a purrer for a bit. I don't know what a healthy cat heart is supposed to sound like. I'd have to practice on some of the other cats first.

He's been tired today as well. The weather was weird and cold and windy. Kevin spent lots of time giving Cal laps and attention. He says he wanted to keep Cal warm.

I can tell you from listening to Bij's heart.....it sounds just like ours only faster. Very distinct and clear. If you have a stethoscope give it a try. Normal heartrate is about double ours. If you hear a slight "squishy" sound that's a murmur. If you can't hear it then it's either gone or a very mild one.

Kevin has the right idea for a day with weather like that.......hibernate and snuggle a kitty on a lap to keep him warm. I bet Cal really appreciates it too.

Sounds like a winning idea to me. In fact that I'm going to do a bit snuggling right
now myself.

Snuggles are good! Nothing like the healing power of snuggles for kitty and peoples alike.

Today we took Cal in to see a vet recommended by a friend in a nearby town. Turns out that he does not have a heart murmur, but he did test positive for FIV. We will be keeping him away from the other cats, supplementing his diet, and seeing how things go. He was a good boy at the vet and rode well in the car. He's resting up from his big day.

Glad to hear that he doesn't have a heart murmur but sorry to hear about
FIV+. Still it will make it harder to for him to find a forever home.

Awwwww........poor little guy. I know there are folks out there who will take an FIV+ baby with no qualms. He doesn't necessarily have to be an only kitty, he could be in a home where the other kitties have it too. No reason he can't have a healthy long life with it.....just need good medical care. A great home will give him that.

All the trouble Cal has had with pneumonia is a sign that his FIV is active, and that his immune system is having trouble fighting off secondary infections. Still, he's eating well, and though his days are quiet, he is happy and comfortable. Here's a picture of him wrapped in his flannel blankie. He can sit with us, and the other cats can't really have contact with him.

Cal probably didn't get much of his mama's first milk--the kind that's chockfull of antibodies to protect tiny kits like him until his own immune system gets going. Now that is going to be harder because of his FIV status, but not impossible.
How is the little guy today?

Cal is doing pretty well. He still sleeps a lot, but at times he's fairly energetic. He's still got residual pneumonia. He is improving slightly, though. I think that the supplement powder we got for him is helping.

Sleep is good for him. Smile Besides... He's a cat. I think they interrupt their naps only for about 2 hours/day.

Hang in there, little Cal! We're all rooting for you.

His face reminds me of Lorien's face. Too bad about the FIV+ issue.
