ARNI - I had radiation treatments for prostate cancer two years ago - I'm still having "blood in my stools" - led to a colonoscopy check about a week ago - definitely "radiation colitis in distal rectum" according to gastro doc - I'm not sure what's better, surgery or radiation.

My grandma had radiation therapy for her throat cancer--gave her what looked like a square patch of sunburn on her throat that lasted about a month. Worked though.

LK, sadly I am not living in Lansing...you have no idea how badly I wish I was living there! If I am feeling as good as I am now, its a pretty quick drive over there and I would have no problem meeting up with you there when you come at the end of May! Smile Like a Star @ heaven

A week ago Wednesday was my fourth of six initial chemotherapy sessions. This time the loopies rolled in a hair earlier and stayed for about a week. This time around eating was a touch difficult but not impossible. I wasn't nauseous and didn't have any acid reflux, but the food didn't seem like it was traveling thru the system as fast as it should. To give myself an incentive to eat, I allowed myself to eat out. The whole week I never got past breakfast and a snack. Thank goodness that passed...got sick of McD's and Burger King...which is probably a good thing Wink

Regarding radiation...I'll continue to listen to what my wizard of an Oncologist says if he brings it up again!

Well, if you're on the west side of town, you'll be able to go to Horrock's. Its like a great big gigantil farmer's market. That place has such an abundant variety, you'll be inspired to eat healthy. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that Memorial Day Weekend was the weekend after my chemotherapy session. The drugs involved have consistently made me feel like I'm high the weekend after I get infused, so I definitely will not be able to get over to Lansing. LK, if I got my weekends mixed up, please let me know A.S.A.P!!

I did have another oncology check-up last Friday and it was actually kind of boring...at least to me anyway! The Oncologist noted the improvement...! Also, I have and appointment with the Neurologist on Wednesday. I imagine I'll get the results of the follow-up MRI's and I also will be getting an EEG exam at that appointment too. Still no MS symptoms... cheers

Last week was a big one for me. The two follow-up MRI's and the EEG exam at the Neurologist's office all came back negative for MS Like a Star @ heaven bounce cheers sunny Of course, I may still have a pesky spinal tap in my future to finally, finally rule out MS. First though, the Neurologist is perscribing physical therapy for my still-gimpy foot. Depending how that goes, I may be explororing surgical options for the peroneal nerve...or the spinal tap for MS.

When I look back on the last Oncology appointment, I realized that I forgot to mentioned that I also saw one of my Oncologist's Resident Fellows. Lots of people might think they are not getting the best attention from a fellow. Me though, I don't mind them. This particular doctor calmed me down about the possibility of getting a spinal tap quite a bit. Instead of calling the procedure a "spinal tap", she referred to it as a "lumbar puncture"...amazing how a different phrase can make something seem a lot less frightening... Sleep Also when I was being examined by the both of them, the fellow remarked to my Oncologist about how the area where my tumor is/was was quite a bit softer than what his notes indicated for my last visit! Smile Eventhough, I didn't get a percentage from either one of them, I took the softness comment as improvement! sunny

I learned a while back, and it was reinforced during my recent medical troubles, to welcome time with nurse practitioners, interns, residents, fellows, etc. In my experience, they are not only very knowledgeable, but are less distracted, under less pressure, and willing to spend more time listening to you and explaining things than many poor ol' overworked docs can be.

Anyway, I'm delighted to hear such a good report!! cheers cheers cheers

Excellent news all around. Yippee!

I remember being in/out of hospitals as a kid. I didn't understand anything that was going on, but the people who were the most comforting were the nurses, interns, and CLEANING LADIES. Smile

Nearly health professional involved in my journey has been absolutely wonderful. The reason I say nearly everyone is because there was just one respiratory tech in the hospital in Lansing that was hitting on me- AND HE WAS THE ONE WHO HAD THE NIGHT SHIFT!! confused Well, you can bet I told the day respiratory techs about him and after that never saw him again the whole four days I was in the hospital!! Twisted Evil

Gak! That's not only smarmy, but downright scary. It's the thing weird movies are made of. I'm glad they took care of it right away.

My mom's a nurse, so I really do appreciate what medical professionals do. It's especially impressive when they're good and also have time/sanity to be kind. So glad you have great people on your team!

Re: Moving Forward with Cancer

Post by ARNIgal on Tue May 28, 2013 2:55 pm

The biggest obstacle now is keeping all of my medical care organised in order to keep the insurance company happy that is handling my Medicaid. The track that I'm on now with an Oncologist and then a Neurologist began when I lived in Lansing and went to the ER over there. I hadn't even chosen a Primary Care Physician by the time I had two specialists. I made a call to my PCP's office so she knew what was going on with my MS news and my physical therapy. Even my own memories of that call this morning make me sound like a crazy person Embarassed I wish there was an easier way to navigate the etiquette of being unhealthy! confused
