She's starting to warm up to me. Today, when I got to the barn, Envoy walked over to say hi. She followed, but kept her distance. I said, "Hi, pretty girl." and she came to the fence to say hi. I need to bring some carrots and apples tomorrow. I ran out of carrots tonight. Cookies had to do! (I need more of those too!)

Today, Falkina and Envoy ROLLED. We had a rainy morning, and they were out together. Apparently, they spent the rain storm time making mud angels. They were still damp when I got there, so tomorrow will be heavy duty grooming day.

I can imagine the squeals of fun they made while making those mud angels! You certainly have your work cut out for you.

They actually grunt like piggies when they roll. Laughing It only took about an hour to find 2 horses under the mud and loose hair. The shedding continues. I sprayed some silicone spray in Falkina's LONG tail to try to get some of the tangles out. It doesn't look tangled, but I can't get some of the sticks/leaves out. So, spray it is.

Envoy, amazingly, is pretty easy to clean up. His hair is short and fine, so he's done quickly.

I brushed Casper and Boogie last night. They are both shedding like crazy. I got enough hair to make a small pony!

Appropriate......since they also look kinda like piggies when they get back up from the mud!

Bet the birds will greatly appreciate all that hair! And a few other little critters too......

The swallows have some tail hairs hanging out of their nest repairs. They're loving shedding season. Glad someone does. It makes the ponies and me itchy. Laughing

I know, and what is it with hair from when you trim the bridle

Oh! My NOT favorite thing about grooming. Laughing

Poor Falkina is in her first heat of the season. She's grumpy. She squealed at Envoy when he went over to get friendly. He nailed her with his back feet, which was not nice. I had to put them in time out. He doesn't have experience with girl horses. She is obviously very sensitive during that time. I think they'll spend time in their separate paddocks for a few days until things get back to normal.

Well, I don't blame her being grumpy if she feels like I do every month........ Envoy is going to have a steep learning curve here in dealing with females at 'that time'.

She was better yesterday. She still seems a bit cramp, but it is getting better. I am going to buy her some herbs to help with the hormone swings. I have to go to the feed store to pick up some rice bran for Casper's buddy anyway. Timing...

There are some herbal supplements that are about like equine Pamprin. It seems like Falkina's seasons are pretty quiet and short. She's just a bit grumpy. So, we'll see if we can get by with the herbal stuff. Vets do carry hormone pills that help mares with really tough times, but I hope to avoid those. They come with warnings for women not to handle them without gloves because they can mess US up.

Yesterday, she gave my AWWW moment. I was riding Envoy, and had given her her shed-out brushing. She found a sunbeam, and curled up for a nap on the grass. She was snoozing the whole time Envoy and I were playing. When he was done and went back out, she leapt up and galloped over to see him. Very Happy I think she's over the grumpy phase.

I'm sure you know about Regumate, huh, Sue? Not nice stuff, but it is effective if needed.

Poor girl. She hates her boarding school house. It's damp and windy out. Her hay is in. She doesn't want to stay in the stall. Sad I know she'll be happier at home because she will be able to see her friends when she's in. I think she doesn't like being alone.

Poor baby. Don't blame her for not wanting to be alone, horses are very social souls. Maybe she's afraid she'll be going to yet another new home if she's alone, with no buddies to help protect her?

Oh! Her house isn't damp and windy. That was outside. But, she preferred out to in. I guess she agreed to go in because she left "evidence" for me today, and the hay I put in was gone. She didn't eat the hay in her net, but that's ok. She prefers the net out on the fence. Smile

Today, I found a little sore by her elbow. I think she might have sensitive skin, and flies are biting. It was cold this morning, but it warmed up nicely this afternoon. Of course, that means that the flies decided to come out.

Is there any way to access her previous vet records? If she has sensitive skin to fly bites or something else I'd think it would've shown up earlier and would be noted in there. You may have to lay in a huge supply of fly and mosquito spray for this summer.

She starts a fly repellant supplement next month, and I always have fly spray. The gnats were out today. Nothing repels them. Nasty little suckers. The horses were hiding out in their stalls.

Hopefully the knats didn't find them in there. Thinking about preferring out to in: could it be she's a tad claustrophic?
