Three tasks down. Three more big ones to go. I have to be at Falkina's barn at lunchtime on Easter Sunday. Her current owner (and her daughter) want to be at the barn to say goodbye. I feel kind of bad. I know I'd be crying if any of my ponies were going to a new home, no matter how nice that home was. I've told them they can come visit. I hope they do!

Make sure to tell them that again when you go get her. And have directions or a map handy to give them so they can find the place.....no excuses then for them not to visit.

Here are a few pix from the great arrival at boarding school. The day was dreary, and Falkina is recovering from getting her shots, so it wasn't a great day for a photo shoot. She promises she will be more perky as the weather improves and she gets used to her new friends and home.

She settled in really well, and seems comfortable enough. I think she's a little sad to leave her friends and people. I told her that I promise to make her new life a good one. Smile I took tomorrow off work to spend time with her and do some "get to know ya."

I also brought Casper and Boogie (???) home tonight. Boogie is the nickname for the vet's horse who needs some personal attention to get some weight and training. He's sweet and BIG. He's growing so fast that her pasture can't give him what he needs to stay in good weight. So, he will keep Casper company. and get a lot more grass here. Once summer gets here, his home pasture should be fine. He will also learn about loading, leading, and being a big horse around people while he's here. Smile

Me thinks you're happy to have somebody or two in the barn
again. I imagine it felt empty.

Thanks! She thinks so even if she's a little sad today. I think she misses her horse buddies and maybe her people. They didn't visit often, but her previous barn owners loved her. She doesn't like the slick, squishy mud in front of her stall door. She spent the night outside last night. My trainer says she will take out the tractor tomorrow and try to fix the door problem. If she still won't go in, Envoy has agreed to trade houses with her. He's bigger and can step over squishy mud. Smile

I rode her today -- lightly. She's a bit out of shape, and needs slow work since she's older. We walked and trotted. Mostly walked. She's a good girl. Not a mean bone in her body. She definitely has an opinion of where she wants to go and at what speed, but once she figured out that I actually do know what I'm doing, she said she would do what I ask as long as I ask correctly.

No pix today. It's hard to take pix while you're riding the horse. Smile

Lovely little lady.......I don't blame her one bit for not wanting to get those nice pretty white feet all muddy. I think she's going to fit in very nicely with the rest of your little herd Becky. Very Happy

Today, Envoy and Falkina went out together. (I'll download the rather bad pix I took later.) They are now officially bonded. She LOVES him. He definitely loves her. It's too cute. I hope she bonds as closely with Casper too.

It was raining and cold today, and Falkina had to go into her stall. She seems to like staying in her paddock after dinner. She was going into her stall for a bite of hay, and then back out to stare at Envoy's paddock. We think she is just kind of sad because she had such a big change. But, Envoy is helping her, and she seems less sad today. I hope with the spring weather that is supposed to start arriving next week, she will start enjoying her new life.

This girl is fun fun FUN. She is strong to ride. She makes you ride right, but she isn't mean about it. If you slack off, she trots wherever she wants and just kind of barges around. You have to ride, and ride well. She's going to teach me a lot.

I started her on Sabi's leftover arthritis medicine. She is a little stiff in her right back leg. At her age, I wouldn't be surprised at all by a little arthritis. So, if it works, I'll ask the vet for an Rx so I can keep her comfortable. I love you

A packer is steady well trained horse that will take of their rider. Sometimes known as a push button
ride. It doesn't mean that you can go to sleep at the wheel though. Laughing

Re: New pony for me?

I don't think she's a packer for anyone. She's definitely an advanced horse. But, she is very well trained, and very kind. She tolerates my mistakes and tells me what I need to fix. I think she would be frightening for a beginner because she's FORWARD. The people at her last barn recommended riding her in a curb bit. I'm currently using a KK Ultra bit (http://equestrian.doversaddlery.com/saddlery/kk-ultra-bit), and she's fine as long as you ride with your body and not your hands. Cool

So, she's a packer, but not a packer. I think I've now confused the issue! Laughing

I think Falkina is sharing some of her knowledge with Envoy. He was a very forward and very good boy tonight. They are almost inseparable, so I wouldn't be surprised. Smile

They do talk to each other. Becky, those horses are perfect for you.
They really are. One thing I'd like to note here. I never rode dressage as
a discipline. Yet for hunting and saddle seat it was the basics you had to master.
So I appreciate what you are doing, the other thing while you call Envoy and Falkina
forward, well to me they are nice calm horses. I rode things that could blow through a
fence if you weren't careful and some of my saddlebreds were hotter than a pepper sprout.

Re: New pony for me?

I don't think of forward as being hot or barging around. I think of it as a horse who pushes from the hind legs into the bridle, is "hot off the leg," and is energetic. It's about the controlled energy and power of a ride. I've ridden horses like you describe, Sue. It's too much. I get exhausted from trying to hold on. Smile

Today, Falkina and I trotted around a lot. I'm trying to build her strength slowly. She's an older lady, and shouldn't be asked to do a lot all at once. She was good for it, and willing to do more. It was hot (for a still-furry horse), so I stopped and gave her a warm shower. She seems very pleased to be a riding horse again.
