New pony for me?

Post by bpaquet on Thu Feb 07, 2013 11:03 pm

A friend of mine who teaches riding lessons, owns a dressage Grand Prix horse, and is in the judges' education program told me about a horse who is trained to 3rd level in dressage, and who is looking for a home. She belongs to a girl who has gone to college and does not have time to ride her any more. She's currently a lesson horse, but would prefer to be in a home with her own family. So, I'm going to meet her next week. She's older (22), but in excellent health. I'm kind of excited. She looks a little bit like Sabi.

Becky, that is delightful news. I think about you every time I see Jeff Mosher's
group in Kentucky, he's got some good ones there.

My friend works with a rescue group, and so I'm going to bring Sabi's blankets to her. I know he wants some poor horse to have nice warm clothes, and she can do that. Smile

I go to see and ride the horse on Friday, and I'm meeting my friend for lunch before. More news then!

I'm getting her! She is a cousin of Sabi's. She was sweet and quiet on the ground. She is a bit strong under saddle, but not in a bad way. She will be a blast to ride. Once her owner told me that she is a Khemosabi horse, I knew I should bring her home. She even wears the same size blanket. Smile

I pick her up at the end of next month. I didn't get pictures today, but I'll take some and post when I can.

A Sabi relative? Cool! Can't wait to see pics and hear all about the 'new horse cuteness'. I'm sure being a relative of Sabi's this one will have quite a personality too. What is her name and when does she arrive at your barn?

She's pretty shaggy now, and her mane/tail are faded. It looks like she's gotten blonde highlights in her black mane. She'll change color and get sleek in the spring. I'll bet she's starting to shed just like Casper is. I need to buy some new brushes!

Her name is Falkina. I don't know what her barn name will be yet. They call her Sweetie or Honey at the barn where she is now, but they call a lot of horses that. So, name is TBD.

The owner called me on Friday. She was really upset because she'd made a mistake. Her other horse, who got a new home a couple years ago, is Sabi's cousin. Falkina is a Bask grandaughter. She's still royalty, and from a tremendous line of Arabs. The owner was worried that I would change my mind because she isn't from Khemosabi. I told her that of course I still want her. She is a lovely mare, and I think she will be very good to have at home. I know Casper will love her, and Envoy will enjoy having his own girl around.

Neither can I......and after looking a horse in the eye who could say no, wrong lineage, don't want her now? Not you and not us.

I'm going to visit Falkina tomorrow. I don't know if we can ride. We've had a lot of rain, and she's at a new barn that doesn't have a prepared riding arena (rather like my house). But, I'll be able to give her some carrots and pets. I'm going to get some brushes and will groom her. I bet she's a different color now that shedding season is in full swing. Smile

I bet she'll love the attention......and the carrots! Making friends first is always a good idea. Ooooo.....how about taking your camera so we can see a pic of her?

Re: New pony for me?

Post by bpaquet on Sun Mar 10, 2013 9:25 pm

I didn't get to the barn at a reasonable time. I was going to go before I visited Envoy and Casper, but I had to bring hay to them. Rather than drive 100 miles with a loaded truck and 50 with an empty truck, I decided to drop the hay off first and drive 50 loaded/100 unloaded. So, I got to Falkina's barn at supper time for ponies. I helped lead the horses in, and Falkina was excellent. Calm and easy to lead. Just a dream.

Falkina was a very sweet girl for her grooming. She fell asleep in the crossties. She's got floppy ears! Cute, cute, cute. I didn't take a picture because she was sleeping, and the barn was dim. I could see pony disaster from setting off a flash in the aisle while she (and the horses in stalls) were snoozing. I'll just have to visit again.
