Petie

Post by bpaquet on Wed Jan 23, 2013 9:44 pm

There really isn't much to tell. He is just kind of slowing down. He isn't in pain or sick. He's just slowing down. I am worried and will take him to the vet, but I won't treat him for something we cannot cure. I don't want to extend any possible pain. It's all part of the circle of life, right? I know when the time comes, he'll be playing with Sabi since they were great friends in their youth.

I'm sorry to hear that Petie, is feeling poorly. Still Becky, the knowing and understanding

Becky mentioned on the Bijoux topic that Petie is headed toward 17. My Blue was over 17 1/2 when he passed, and had been getting thinner for several years prior. He only seemed to slow down within the last month or two though - but he was never one to dart around and play. However, he could take a bird out of mid air if he so chose, and had no problem climbing the 6' fence or making the two jumps to get to the top of the kitchen cabinets - even in his last few months. He was just very good at conserving his energy. I love you

I hope Petie has a few good years left. Slow is OK too.

My Miss Kitty lost weight and slowed down several years before she passed at 17 1/2. She was still fiesty for the vet though right up to the end...when she passed in her sleep.

At nearly 17 Petie is the equivalent of a 74 year old human. I don't know many 74 year olds who move pretty fast anymore. It's natural to slow down. As long as Petie is enjoying life and not in any pain it's okay. Still, have him checked over thoroughly to rule out any health issues that could be causing his weight loss, including diabetes. Kitties can get that too and weight loss is one of the first signs. http://pets.webmd.com/cats/guide/diabetes-symptoms-cats

Same thing happened with Ascot when he was about 17 and he lived to see 20 or 21.

The vet is actually surprised that Petie made it as long as he has. He spent such a long time outside, and that takes a toll on a kitty's health. No noticeable problems. Blood sugar is ok. The kidney counts are bad, but it isn't abnormal for old kitties.

He ate some food tonight, and has gone upstairs to lie on his rocker. That is pretty typical Petie behavior. If he's happy, I'm happy. I will let him make the decisions. It's kind of like Sabi. When the time comes, he'll let us know.

Kidneys are in decline? Enough to need special food perhaps? I know high protein diets are hard on aging kidneys, and if the kidneys aren't working well enough their blood potassium levels drop and that effects just about everything else. Did the vet check potassium levels by any chance?

Petie is doing pretty well for a former outdoor kitty. Here's to hoping he enjoys several more wonderful inside years in retirement, getting all the love and spoiling he deserves. Smitten

A couple years ago when Petie's kidneys started to go downhill, we tried the Rx food. He hates it. It won't do him any good if he won't eat it. He seems to like the lamb and rice cat food, so I cook up some extra rice and stir in the food. He's eating more these days, so maybe I've hit on something.

Could be.....keep up the home cookin' for our older gent Becky. He must like it since he's eating more of it. The kitty stamp of approval. cat
We used K/D for Fiffur for his kidney issues and he did well on that for over 6 years. No further kidney decline at all.

That's the stuff that Petie didn't like. I think it's because he was outside so much. He is really pretty picky about his crunchy food. I have him on Science Diet Age Defying right now. He's ok with it, but not thrilled. He sticks mostly to the soft food these days. If he had his way, he'd probably ask for spaghetti sauce with sausage in it. He LOVES tomatoes. Laughing

He does? I've never heard of a kitty who loved tomatoes before. I wonder if he'd eat the K/D wet if it were mixed with his usual wetfood for a few weeks....then gradually increase the K/D somewhat. Just a thought.

I can try, but I really think the time is coming close. He is sleeping more and more. He went on the porch and looked out. That's a lot like what Shadow did right before she left us. She went outside, slept in the sun, and just let go. I hesitate to let Petie out because it's cold and wet. There isn't a nice "sleep in the sun" spot. Sad

Today's breakfast was a little milk in a bowl. I left some 1/2 & 1/2 with him for the day. He didn't finish it, but he had some. He ate some dinner, drank water, and patrolled the windows. Now, he's back to his spot in the guest room. That was his brother's place until the very end too.

And he knows you've always had his best interests in mind instead of your own. I am so sorry Becky, I know this is a hard decision to make and live with. Sad I know you will make Petie's last days good ones. He got to enjoy the good life of laps, warmth, a soft bed, the works in his retirement.

He's back downstairs tonight, and is lying on the blanket with a heating pad under it. He ate a little dinner, and seems to be enjoying being with us. The little guy is still the best little shaky tail kitty. When I said hello, his tail just shivered. Smile
