Re: Sabi's saga continued

Sabi spent the day in his stall with a stuffed hay net. He wasn't unhappy to be there. Envoy and Casper are in the pasture behind the barn so they can visit over the gate. Since Sabi could see them, he wasn't upset about being alone in the barn. Our nice neighbor came over at lunch time to check on him and said he was doing fine. At stall cleaning time after work, he walked across the aisle without the stop/wonder-if-I-can-go gait he developed yesterday.

He is on 4 bute pills per day, so some of his walking better is the meds, but I'll take it. This will be a slow thing if it's going to happen.

I'll go out in an hour to do a check and hay refresh. Oh yea... And a quick house cleaning.

None of us are ready to say goodbye. I choose to trust that this new regime will turn things around, and that you can convince Sabi not to be a butt about it, for his own good. Esh. He might not like being restricted once he feels better. I'm sending the best vibes I've got for your courage and outlook, and Sabi's acceptance and patience. And a whole lotta love to you both.

Bed check shows a Sabi on his feet and ready for more hay. I brushed him and loved on him. He's still really sore, but that's to be expected. I put a bandage on his foot to lift his heel and maybe help relieve some of the pressure on his toe. We'll see how tomorrow morning looks.

I sure hope this new no grass regime works............I'm not ready to say goodbye to Sabi's hijinks either. I'm hoping some of the better walking around is not the meds, but the no grass that's working. Trusting that is the case.

Today, he was playing over his wall with Envoy, who was at the barn gate. This means he had to stand on his feet and stretch over the wall. A definite improvement. He also seems perkier. He is slow walking, but I don't expect instant improvement in that department.

He did get some bad news from the vet. NO CARROTS. Sad Poor pony. It's the no sugar diet for him -- and he's skinny.

Is there any treat you can give him that doesn't break the No Sugar rule?

Today, Sabi showed real improvement. He was pushing on the door to go out. I opened his stall door and he walked out into the aisle. He is moving better, but is not ready to go into the pasture yet. He has at least a few more days of restriction. I'll probably need to buy a muzzle to keep him from overeating grass. I'll consult with the vet this weekend. (Thank goodness we're friends, so I don't have to call only during business hours. We text. Smile )

Treats today consisted of special horse cookies for ponies on the sugar free diet. He wasn't as thrilled as he is with carrots, but they'll have to do for now. Once he gets stable/better, carrots will go back on the diet.

Poor Sabi....no carrots. I'd be a little less then thrilled if I craved carrots but got sugar free cookies instead. I did find quite a few recipes for sugar free horsie treats online. Maybe he'd be happier with those instead?

I am so glad the sugarfree diet is working. I had no idea sugar in the diet would affect a pony's feet.

Huh. Yeah. Sabi's going to LOVE a muzzle that won't let him eat grass. Oh, Becky, you may be about to "live in interesting times." Shocked

No progress today, but no regress either. He is very perky, and looks happier, but he's still slow and sore. I'm going to shop for stall toys tomorrow. I think he might be a bit bored. I'll talk to the vet this weekend to see what I'm supposed to expect. I think things are going the way they're supposed to. We'll just have to be sure he's improving and not just staying in his stall for the rest of his life.

Well, letting Envoy and Casper go out in an unattached pasture is a no-go. Sabi was having a meltdown. I put them in the back pasture again (which is getting beat up by having horses on it for so long). I'm thinking I'll try opening the gate between that pasture and the big one so they can come and go to visit Sabi. Not sure it will work since they probably will be in the big pasture all the time and Sabi won't be able to see them. We'll see how it works since I'll be home all day today.

I'm hoping at least Casper will come from time to time to check on his friend stuck in the barn. Let us know how it goes.....

We set up a tiny dry lot so Sabi could go outside. He isn't comfortable at all, but he does love to have the sun on his back. He's very tired from that little adventure tonight. I am holding onto hope, but it is very hard to see him in such pain. Crying or Very sad

I'm afraid it might be time. I am not ready yet, and Sabi's attitude is still bright. I can't put him down until he tells me he's ready. The farrier is coming on the 25th, and I don't know if he can do something to relieve the pain. I do know that Sabi's feet will be what determines his end. I am just having a hard time deciding that it's time to stop fighting. I know Sabi will tell me when it's time. Until then, all I can do is try to keep him comfortable and love him. Sad

Today there was a little improvement. I put his boot on his newly hurting foot. That seemed to help a lot. He walked out to his little pen with real steps not the lurching stuff he's been doing. He looked happy in the sun with his hay net on the fence. I think he spent most of the day napping in the sun. I hope this means that things are looking up. scratch Question

I think, as the end of this life approaches, as it does for us all, each day is sufficient unto itself. Sabi was happy in the sun today. For today, that's enough.

I'm hoping the vet can figure out what's going on with Sabi, and that it's nothing too serious. With his attitude still bright, I just can't see that he's ready to 'go' yet.
