I can see already how they really fleshed out the first 100 pages to make the first almost-3-hour movie. They're adding lots of details in the movie that isn't in the book. I imagine they'll do that for the next two Hobbit movies, due out the next two Christmas'. In the book the party happened a lot sooner than in the book, the dwarves left but Gandalf got Bilbo out the door the next morning. Gandalf also brought pipes, tobacco, clothes, and handkerchiefs for Bilbo but I liked the movie version better where he forgot them and one of the dwarfs lent him a piece of his shirt for a handkerchief and Gandalf told him he'd have to do without a few luxuries on their adventure. That seemed a bit more like true to life.

There are the appendices from the Lord of the Rings. It's possible most of the material came from that.

Now halfway through the Hobbit. Taking my time with this one. That way I won't have to wait too long for the first LOTR book to come back to the library (it's checked out).

And the Mountains Echoed. I love everything this man's written.

Next on the list, The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian.

Only 70 pages to go.....then wait for the first book of Lord of the Rings. Those 3 books are ALWAYS checked out! They never sit on the shelf more than a couple hours here before they get checked out again.

I have my own copies of LOTR which I've owned for over 30 years. I recently reread the Hobbit but didn't enjoy it as much as I had in my teen years., but it is essentially a children's book.
been plowing through more YA books, and am starting a new batch of cozy mysteries, thanks to my friend who has given me a new batch

I'm reading Stiff by Mary Roach

Deeply serious, utterly hilarious and simply fascinating. And, at times, gross. I'm loving it!

Got LoTR, from a different library. This one is all 3 books in one volume and weighs a small ton. I don't think 3 weeks is going to be enough time to read all 1200 pages of it. I can see already how they condensed the first 100 pages down when they made the movie. Didn't know Frodo was supposed to have been 50 years old when he set out with the ring.....

I think almost half of Fellowship of the Ring was left out of the movie.

I finally finished Beautiful Mind this past Thursday.

I'm impressed you read Beautiful Mind, Fluff. The movie was deeply engaging, but still, emotionally difficult to watch. I might not have made it through the book.

certtainly a good portion of Retrun of the King was left out of the LOTR trilogy- The Scouring of the Shire could have made a movie by itself

Then I'm glad I'm reading the book--finally. They changed a few things already......like how Merry and Pippin joined him on the journey.

I can see what you mean and I think they left out 3/4 of that book. Now onto book 2................ I am never going to finish all three in only three weeks.........it's a 3 book-one volume book I borrowed from the library. Just hope there isn't a waiting list for it so I can renew it to finish it.

Had to renew the book.....only 2/3 of the way through the 2nd and this is a all-in-one edition. They sure left a lot out when they made the movies....but if they'd left it all in they'd have had to make at least 6 marathon movies.

Somehow I wish they'd made it into six movies or three really long movies ala Kevin Costners type of movie. What they left out would've made the movies a lot richer in backstory and the book sure is explaining a lot I didn't quite understand when I saw the movies. Now up to the chapters where Frodo, Sam, and Smeagol got captured by Faramir.

Faramir, sigh, the sweetest man in Gondor.
What gets me is that they did leave out so much, yet managed to make three films out of The Hobbit, which was a slim little lightweight childrens story. that's just me griping

Well, the Hobbit didn't go into a lot of details about this and that adventure. But they're going into details, and making the story more real, more like LOTR. I liked the first movie and look forward to the other two. Just wish we didn't have to wait so long to see them.

Now finally onto the 3rd book. I see parts of the second book was used in the third movie. Makes me think they're going to skip a LOT of the third book. I'm watching the movies again a bit at a time, reading a chunk of the book, then the movie for comparison.

I hear you there Lovekitties.  Faramir goes through so much, yet keeps his sweetness intact.
Now up to Frodo and Sam leaving the Black Tower, ducking orcs, to get to Mt. Doom.  Meanwhile, Faramir and company are at the Black Gate about to battle Sauron's army........
I just might get this book finished by the time it's due on the 9th.....then again I might have to renew for another week so I can read all the appendixes.....
