Waldo Canyon Fire

Post by gbste on Thu Jun 28, 2012 8:04 pm

This is about 3 hours from us. Nothing here is on fire--yet. Lots of displaced people, lots of destruction.

I've seen those. Our rescue in Lamar is seeing if we need to take any pets in for evacuees.

I've seen them, too. Gbste, I can't imagine how you must be scrambling. Will you take others in? And what if you need to evacuate?

One good thing about living way out on the prairie is that you don't get the same kind of fires--a grass fire goes by very quickly and usually stops at towns. People who are out on farms may lose an outbuilding or two, but we're relatively safe here. I was temporarily stranded 30 miles from here one time on the way back from a pet fair because there was a grass fire crossing the highway. Luckily I could hang out at the lovely home of a fellow volunteer until the fire moved on. People down here have been observing the burn ban for a change.

We don't know if any animals will be sent this far. Two big fair grounds are taking both large and small animals. I hope we know soon.

The fires out in the prarie must be less devastating since there are no tall trees to give height to the flying embers.

Prairie fires are scary because they move so fast, but you're right; they just don't have the height or the fuel to make a firestorm.

I'm looking around for donation info.

It sounds like these folks are the ones who need the most immediate help. They are setting up mass animal shelters for evacuee pets. Plus, they seem to be in touch with all the people and businesses that are providing emergency space for the overflow of animals from the official shelters.

I sent a check as well. I'm very afraid for a friend of mine who lives in Colorado Springs. I can't get in touch with her.

They're asking people in the Springs to not use their cell phones except for emergencies, so try not to worry about your friends there too much yet. The fire is 70 percent contained, and many people are returning to their homes. My friend who runs the cat rescue up there got to go home Sunday--after some folks from the Air Force Academy went into the area and cleaned up after the bears. Shocked

Bears who were driven out of their habitat came down into deserted neighborhoods and were
raiding trash cans, dumpsters and I think they even got into houses.

The bears were just going where they've always gone when things get tough. Not their fault someone built houses there.
