I wonder what happened to cause his little hip unevenness. I'll never know, but I do wonder. I also wonder if exercise would help. If he was stronger in his back, maybe his hips would feel better. I need to start regular work with him. Walk, walk, walk. That's usually the therapy that does ponies the most good.

Poor nutrition at various stages may have had a lot to do with it. Bone supplements might help, but of course you'd have to ask the vet about all that. Hopefully the chiropractor will have some ideas, too. But I think your plan sounds good. A stronger back can make a world of difference to the hips, as I personally know.

I'm with Suzzz at least on the chriopracter(sp) part. You can teach a horse more at a walk than
any other gate.

Without knowing much of Casper's history, would having been ridden too much or too early have caused his hip issues?

I know that strong muscles help support joints, so it stands to reason that it would help with achy hips if the muscles for the hips were strong....

The massages are working at making him happy if they aren't doing anything therapeutic. He gets all sleepy-eyed and LEANS on my hands when I'm doing it. I rub on his ham strings and back muscles, and he just goes all wiggly. It's cute. At first, I thought he might be complaining, but then it was obvious that he was moving around and saying, "Not quite there. Try more this way." Wink

He came out of his stall this morning and did a full body stretch. Either he's working out the kinks or he's asking for more rubs. Cute boy. Very Happy

He's in trouble today. He and Sabi were out last night because the weather is so wonderful and the bugs aren't too bad. When I woke up (early for work thank goodness!), I saw Sabi at the barn door, which is the gate to the pasture. He called to me. I didn't see Casper, which is a bit unusual. I opened the gate and Sabi went into his stall, and then I saw Casper ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ELECTRIC FENCE. Suspect He had crawled between the tapes and was moseying around the edge of the pasture laughing at me. So, that's where he found the mud... There's a drainage ditch that used to be a supply canal on the edge of our property.

He came trotting into his stall laughing the whole time. Of course, the fence is a mess and we'll have to get that all put back together. The boys went into a different pasture that doesn't use that fence charger. Obviously, something isn't "hot." Looks like a weekend shopping trip.

Yeah, maybe you should've named him Houdini, especially if he keeps up with the great escapes! Way too smart for his own good.

OMG, that's hilarious! Oh, Becky, you've now got two sparky gentlemen on your hands. And soon you'll have three! Watch out, honey. Casper's been "on the streets" (in horse parlance) and now that he's feeling his oats he might turn out to be an (Oliver) twister! This might the the Summer Of Mischief.

We just priced a new fence charger. All signs point to a dead charger. It's sad, but I kind of look forward to Casper finding out that the fence can bite back. When Envoy found that out, he ran bucking a farting across the pasture. He hasn't even gotten close to the hot fence since. Laughing

Casper may be one of those horses that can tell when the fence is hot or
not Rolling Eyes . If he is you might price a charger that is solar powered, hopefully
there is such a thing.

Actually, solar powered fence chargers are old stuff. They've been around for at least 10 years or so. We've always had one. The problem with them is that eventually, the battery just wears out. I have yet to see a charger that has a replaceable battery. The sun charges the battery, which powers the fence. So, when the battery wears out, it's time for a new charger. I'd like to invent a charger that ran on sun and used a battery only for night time or cloudy days. I think it would last longer.
