Definitely sounds like a good plan to me. And meeting new friends will expand Casper's world beyond the pasture. Who knows....someday he might actually learn to look forward to traveling just to see which friend will be at the other end of the ride.

Any chance of getting a friend to ride out on Envoy with you & Casper?

Chances of finding an Envoy rider are pretty slim. My trail friends prefer gaited horses (like Paso Finos and Tennessee Walking Horses), and they would be uncomfortable on a big 3-gaited horse who could bounce them around. If you're used to riding a smooth gaited horse, a trotting horse can be a challenge. Also, Sabi needs a buddy to stay home and keep him company. But, all is not lost. I think Casper will be fine with other horses around even if he does just prefer his own family. Smile

We tried a pasture ride yesterday, but something was SCARY. If Casper is scared, something is going on. I think it might have been the weather change, but whatever it was caused him to hump up like he was going to buck or run. We only rode for about 10 minutes, then it was saddle off. He didn't do anything silly, but I could tell he was not comfortable with the idea of carrying me around. We'll try again another time. Today, I'm off to the trainer's with Envoy.

Could there possibly have been something weird in the pasture? Baby snakes in the grass or something? Wrong time of year for that, I suppose. I hate to think he's having PTSD-type flashbacks, but who knows? It might just be the weather -- I know it's not the same, but Weezer had an episode of wild-eyed kitty this afternoon that rivaled anything I've ever seen. At one point I actually thought she was going to climb the wall and attack the pictures. Sounds silly and funny, but she was seriously agitated and I was really concerned. The fall weather change always makes her a bit wild, and now that I won't let her outside she seems much worse than normal.

Hey, maybe we're about to have another earthquake. Shocked

No more earthquakes, please! I didn't mind it, but the last one gave Casper a tummy ache. Suspect

I do think the weather change has everyone wound up. The kitties are jumping around like crazy -- even Petie. Casper and Envoy have been kind of skittish. I don't think there was anything in the pasture. There might have been deer in the woods around the pasture. We do have a family who lives here.

ARNI, I do think Casper has been ridden. He's normally quiet and agreeable. He is green, but he has definitely had someone in a saddle on his back. I think he might have had a rough time of it. When I try to take the bridle off, he snaps his head way in the air -- still holding onto the bit, and just freaks out. I have to drop the whole thing and let him release the bit. It's really weird, and I don't know if someone beat him or yanked on his mouth when they were bridling him. Whatever it was, he definitely has issues about letting go of the bridle. Poor pony.

Head shy is one of the hardest fears to overcome. At least in my experience.
Still you know what to do and in time he will be fine or least not as bad.

Funny thing is that he isn't classically head shy. He lets us touch his ears, play with his forelock and put the bridle on. It's only taking it off that is a problem. I think next time, I'll feed him a cookie at the same time I slip it over his ears. Food seems to be a great motivator for our Casperman.

Food is a great motivator in anybody's world. That's interesting that he gets
upset when you unbridle, still a cookie never hurts.

It breaks my heart that someone has been cruel to our Casper. Unbridling is obviously a trigger. Still, there's nothing like patience, gentle words, growing trust, and cookies. If any couple can overcome something like this, it's you and Casper, Becky. Good luck.

Maybe whoever used to unbridle him in his past wasn't patient, and jerked him around, hurting his mouth and ears? Who knows, but I wouldn't doubt something along those lines made him like this. Poor guy.

Casper got a new rain sheet this year. He wears the same size as Envoy, and I found a 2 for 1 sale in the spring. So, now he has a brown sheet with red borders/straps. It's not the best color for him, but it's going to keep him dry. His blue sheet (which looked GREAT on him) is too small now that he's filled out. Unfortunately, it's too big for Sabi. Neutral

Aw, geez. No Paris runway for our boy this year, with such an unfashionable cloak. It's a danged shame, too; I know how much he was looking forward to Fashion Week. *sigh* I suppose staying dry and comfy is some consolation.

I'm totally teasing! tongue And I totally understand. Hey, I recently put off buying Weezer a new tub for her litterbox because they didn't have the dark blue I wanted for her, just that ugly putty color. We want everything for our beautiful ones to be as beautiful as they are. Silly mamas. I love you

Anyway you can somehow take in that blue sheet so it would fit Sabi? Shame to waste it because it's too big.

Sabi has one that matches. I'll just keep the too-small one as a backup. It can go under something if Casper is getting wet or something. It can be a liner. Smile The new sheet worked great to keep him dry today. It poured for most of the day. We're actually kind of soggy now.

Still soggy sheet weather today. Casper and Envoy went out and Sabi stayed inside. Casper was unsure about going out without his old buddy, but he did ok with Envoy out there. He came up to the gate every once in a while just to check on Sabi. He's turning into a great babysitter.

And he obviously loves his buddy Sabi. That must've been so sweet to see Casper checking on him like that.

Today was sunny and a little warmer. My white pony got FILTHY rolling in the soggy grass and mud. Fortunately, he had dried off by bed check time so I could brush him off. Now, he's only vaguely brownish.
