We've been lucky with our weather this year. It's been hot, but we've had good rain.

I'm getting it! Sabi has 2 white back feet & 1 white front foot, with a flash of white lightening down his face. Envoy has no socks and a white hourglass that starts on his forehead, thins down, then opens over his nose. How beautiful they both are! Very Happy
So that was Sabi exuding calm in the field while you and Casper were riding. Smitten

It sure is. Sabi seems to be the one saying, "Take it all in stride." Envoy is the one saying, "I'm not paying any attention to you. There's GRASS." Laughing

Casper and I had our first ride with no one (besides his friends) in the pasture. He started off really well, but flies kept buzzing his belly. I had to get off to get fly spray. After that, it was all systems go. He needed a dressage stick to pay attention to the "go" signal, but he did great. No beating with the stick. Just a touch after I squeezed with my legs.

I started calling him "Green Pea" because he's obviously a greenie.

LOL!!! Great that it went so well. The"stick" is merely an add on to natural aids.

Do I understand? The stick is like a longer crop, that you use to touch a back hip (or wherever) to let the pony know you want him to move once you've given him the signal you want him to learn? (Don't worry, Becky, nobody thinks you're whuppin' our Casper!) I'm so glad he did well. Sounds like he's enjoying this new adventure. I love you

You understand perfectly, Suzzzz. The stick is about 3 feet long (40 inches for mine), and is used behind the leg. You can touch the hip or croup if you need to, but in the beginning training, you use it to reinforce the leg aid. So, it's squeeze with the leg, and if no response, touch with the stick. Soon, the horse associates the leg with "go."

We didn't ride today. Envoy and I had a nice ride in the morning, but it was kind of humid. The little black flies were out in force. I bathed Envoy in fly spray, and they were till kind of bad. So, I figured Casper could have a day off so he doesn't associate riding with bad things. Since we are off to such a good start, I want to keep things going well. Maybe we'll take him on a short trail ride with a friend later when the bugs are pretty much gone.

The stick thing sounds good. I have no doubt Casper wants to do what you want him to do, and this gives him the hint he needs to figure it out. Very nice! Very Happy

Glad you and Mr. E had a good ride, and kind and wise to give C a day off if the bugs are biting. We have 2 days of hot & humid here, then it's supposed to clear off and get cooler and dryer; hopefully you'll have the same. And hopefully the coming Fall will be a charmed weather window for Casper's new phase. Fingers crossed! I love you

It would!

I wonder what Casper will think of trail rides. It's possible that taking him beyond his comfort zone (the pasture with Sabi nearby) might initially alarm him, but I suspect he trusts you enough to give it a go when y'all are ready. He's adapted so well to life with you (blossomed, really), and is so willing to try all the new stuff you want to teach him, I think he'll probably enjoy it as much as you do. Very Happy

Casper would only go on trails with other horses. I don't think he will ever be alone. He worries WAY too much. I would bring my friend's horse here and then load up Casper so he would have his partner in the trailer to get to the trails. He will be a bit upset to leave Sabi and Envoy, but when he finds out that he's coming home to them, he'll figure it all out. I'm thinking that October might be our month if work gives me enough time to do anything fun.
