foster puppies

Post by gbste on Sat Mar 31, 2012 5:25 pm

The 3 little small breed mutts we had all got adopted last Saturday. Today 6 black labs arrived. We're hoping that someone can foster 3 of them, as we already have a lot on our plate, pet wise. They are gorgeous, and huge, at least compared to the last crew we had. Fiffur, I will email you the pics.

Labs are popular, but sometimes you run into the "black dog" syndrome. This bunch may well be pure bred. The mama is registered, and the papa is the neighbor's dog. The son of the gal who surrendered them says the dad is an "American" lab. I think that's what a lot of hunters have around here, so he may be right.

Well, 4 of the pups are headed out to another rescue tomorrow morning. We'll keep 2 little boys (boys are less stressful for our schnauzer, Abby) and get them ready for the adoption fair on the 14th. Everyone will get more attention.

I'm glad that there is another rescue group that was willing to take some of the dogs.

It's raining like crazy outside tonight. Since the pups got here, it has been very warm and pleasant at night, so the pups slept out in the kennel. The weather channel said that things would be bad tonight, so we wedged an extra crate into the livingroom and brought everyone in at dusk. I just finished putting everyone out for a successful potty break. Both crates were clean and dry, so these doggies should housetrain easily. The six puppies that were so hesitant to come inside earlier were sure glad to come back in out of the rain.

Smart pups! I also thought of Pol's lil ones when I saw that pic. So much cuteness, I bet it won't be hard to find homes for these lil (or is that not so lil?) ones.

How are the kitties?

The kitties are doing well. Bernardo is now at Look What the Cat Brought In, and is very popular there. Patrick is becoming a lap kitty at times, and is still a fraidy cat at other times, but he will be a nice little pet for someone.

The 2 lab puppies we still have are doing great. We have named them Walt (after Walt Whitman) and Ralph (RW Emerson). They are crate trained, and I will break out my clicker tomorrow, as we have Good Friday off for some reason this year. Walt is a little huggie bear, while Ralph is (appropriately) very Self Reliant.

Post by gbste on Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:18 pm

We found out yesterday that 2 of the puppies we transferred to another rescue have come down with Parvo! So far Walt and Ralphie are extremely healthy. All the pups were vaccinated and vet checked at 6 weeks of age, and all were healthy when they were here, so I'm hoping that the Parvo diagnosis was incorrect. Fingers crossed for the little sick pups to get better, and for the healthy ones to stay healthy.

These 2 boys are very endearing. They know how to sit, and are learning to lie down with clicker training. We've had some inquiries, but no apps yet for them. Our big lab mixes recently passed, and it would be very tempting to keep one of these little boys, but I don't know that we're in good enough shape to keep up with a growing lab. It would be more fair to them to find an active family.

That's sad news, hopefully it was caught soon enough that the pups will recover completely.
Labs require a lot of exercise both physical and mental. Great dogs for the right people.

Here's to continued good health.

Gosh! I wish we were closer. I LOVE labs. But, I am far away, and I probably don't have enough time at home to raise a puppy well. Even when Envoy isn't in boarding school, I'm gone between 12 and 14 hours per day. I sure do miss having a doggie.

I'm sorry to hear about the Parvo. My fingers, toes and eyes are crossed that they get better and that the others stay well.

I'm hoping that was a misdiagnosis............considering they were vaccinated how could they have it? Sending ((((((((((((STRONG HEALING VIBES))))))))))))))) for whatever is making them sick.

Re: foster puppies

Ralphie was adopted yesterday by a nice young couple. His new mom is a medic in the Air Force. She's posted at the Air Force Acadamy for the next few months, then the family is moving to their property in Oklahoma--over 300 acres, with ponds and an actual lake! His new dad works in the oil fields. It's dangerous work, but pays very well, and he only has to work a few days each month. Walt came home again. We have decided to see if our bossy little schnauzer will accept him. If she does, he will live here and we will work very hard to get him all the activity he will need to be healthy and happy. He has been spending some quality time with our boy Skippy, and both of them are happy about that. Abby has been very nice to him through the crate, so fingers crossed.
