Henry is at the bridge

Post by gbste on Wed Feb 01, 2012 4:13 pm

I just found out that my elderly dog, Henry, passed this morning. He's Pansy's brother. He'd been having a lot of mobility problems because of bone spurs in his spine, but he could walk and eat and hang out with us. We had to lift him most of the time because he couldn't get up by himself, and he had trouble telling what his back paws were doing, but he would also have good days where he could get up on his own.

Yesterday he had an upset stomach, so he had chicken broth for dinner. He was sick during the night, and this morning he didn't want to get up. I talked to Kevin at lunch. He got a vet appointment for Henry at 9:30, but by 9:10, Henry had passed in his sleep. Kevin said Henry was sleeping peacefully just before 9:00, but when he went in to gather him up for the vet, Henry was gone. The vet says that most likely one of the bone spurs had severed his spine while he slept, and so he passed without pain. I hope he wasn't just saying that for our benefit.

Henry is looking through the window, his sister Pansy is right behind him, Skippy is behind her, and Maggie is looking on. Maggie went to the bridge several years ago.

The best thing about that picture is that there was nothing happening in the garage. Maggie pretended to be interested in the garage to get the other dogs up off her favorite nap spot on the porch. Once they were all trying to look through the window, Mags snared her spot.

Ah, there's nothing like family. That's such a great picture and such a funny story! It almost feels like my heart isn't breaking for you. But, oh, it is. I'm so, so sorry for the loss of your darling Henry.

I am so sorry about Henry, I know your heart hurts but you also know he's no longer in pain. Wish I could've seen that pic, but the story was so cute.

That's a lovely picture, LK. Henry certainly deserves it. He had a beautiful heart. Maggie would be great at showing him the ropes in his new place. She did that for him and Pansy when they arrived as puppies.

Did she, now? Then surely she is with Henry now, and will be there when Pansy is ready to cross.

I'm trying a bit of copy & paste to see if I can re-post the pic for Fiffur.

That is a great picture of Henry. I can imagine him looking through a window at the bridge with the other, watching over you and waiting for the day when you both cross that bridge into heaven together.

I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet ol' dog.
I don't think the vet said there was no pain only for your benefit. If Henry was sleeping, then he would have awakened if there had been pain. I know pain sure wakes me up! He just drifted off, knowing he was safe in his home with the people he loved. What better passing could there be?

That is a cute, cute picture. Thank you for posting it.
Hugs to you and your husband and all the rest of your babies.
