I know the heat you've been having lately has been downright brutal. Imagine standing out in it with a furcoat on you can't take off. Would the boys play in the sprinklers to cool off by any chance?

I don't think they would. I do give them hose baths when it's so hot. I just run cold water through the hose and spray end. They normally eat grass while I hose them off. But, I don't think they'd seek out a sprinkler. In the "old" days when Sabi was only 8, he got into the water tub, but I don't think he intended to swim. I think he was just pushed around and somehow ended up in the huge tub. It was funny.

Today was much cooler. It was humid, but only in the mid 80s. Sabi seemed a bit more comfortable. I think some of his discomfort is from the HARD ground. We haven't had a drop of rain in about 3 weeks. The grass is drying up and the dirt is like a rock. I hope we get some rain soon. After the wet, cold winter when I swore that I never wanted to see rain, we're having a hot dry summer. The only benefit is that we don't have our normal swarms of mosquitoes.

Somehow, the Sabi in the tub story has
got to be a good one.

yeah, I'd like to hear more about that story myself.

And if it were possible, I'd send some of our rain your way Becky. We have way too much, and more on the way yet. We've been under a flash flood advisory for weeks on end now. And the skeeters are horrible!

Re: Sabi's saga continued

Sabi's had quite the life. The tub story...

We boarded at Langley Air Force Base when I first bought Sabi. He was there when I met him, and I figured since I qualified to stay there and the board was inexpensive, I would stay. They had a huge herd of horses -- about 35 on 15 acres. Sabi was close to the bottom of the pecking order. Mares and geldings went out together, so there was often a bunch of scrambles at dinner time.

The lady who managed the stable let the horses run in and run out at meal time, so it got kind of crazy. The mares would push to the front of the crowd and go in first. The pushier geldings would fight with the others (ears back and ugly faces only) to be next.

Sabi was a little shy back then and wouldn't get pushy. I guess one day, he let somebody intimidate him and was backing away. I didn't see how he got into the tub, but when I got to the barn, there he was... knee deep in the drink tub. The thing was huge -- about a 300 gallon tank, so the size of about 6 bathtubs put together. He had plenty of room to sit back and jump out. But! No! Not Sabi. He had to make a splash -- literally. He went to jump and underestimated. He tipped the tub over and came strolling out like nothing happened even tough he kind of rolled around when he tripped. It was like seeing a big horse-shaped cat. He strolled out of the pasture like he was saying, "I meant to do that."

Our poor boy!! But really, so perfect that, after that embarassing moment, he made like a cat licking itself repeatedly in "What do you mean? I meant to do that!" mode. Sabi may have been the the low man on the totem pole back then, but he had a sense of of his own dignity, didn't he? Very Happy

How did you come to make his aquaintance in the first place?

(BTW, I was born at the Air Force hospital at Langley Field in 1954. No wonder I feel such an affinity with Sabi! Smile )

Wow, Suzzzz! It is a small world, isn't it?

Sabi was an "internet hookup" for me. My husband and I had been married for a couple years, and I wanted a horse. I had been leasing one while he was on his Med run (6 months in the Mediterranean) and I was in Northern VA. That gave me a taste of what it would be like to have my own horse. So, I started shopping.

I was just getting into the internet stuff at work. This was the early 90s, and the web was all new and cool. I joined a listserv about horses and riding. One day, I learned that one of the members worked right down the street from me, and she, too, was looking for a horse. She had gone to meet Sabi a few days before and didn't want to buy him. She was looking for a gaited horse.

I decided to go to LAFB to meet him and my horsey friend from college came along. Sabi was a real champ. He was a little hot and not well trained, but he was gentle and cooperative. He would do whatever he was asked to do as long as he understood. He and I just clicked, and I wrote the check the next day.

So Sabi's been with you for, what, nearly 20 years?? I had no idea. Y'all must have had some wonderful times together! I'll bet there are many untold Sabi sagas out there waiting to be told.

I bought Sabi in 1994, so almost 20 years. It doesn't seem that long though. He's still my little pony.

He is doing ok. He would like his shoe to be different, but he's coping well. I hope the farrier can make it out this coming week, but if he can't, I think Sabi will do ok. He would just like it to be a different shoe.

Wow, sounds like Fate had a hand in that day when you met Sabi. He wasn't meant to be your friends horse, but yours. The years sure do fly by when you have the right one at your side, doesn't it?

That they do. I always think of him as my little pony. It surprises me every time I see some gray hairs over his eyes. (Of course, it surprises me to see gray hairs on MY head too.) affraid

LOL!!! I know that what you mean, Becky.
Speaking of gray, Ascot didn't have any gray on
him. His markings remained the same until he died.

Then Ascot aged very gracefully. Bijoux on the other hand is getting more and more of those stray white hairs, and is developing a lil white bracelet on his left hind ankle. Otherwise he looks like his usual handsome self.

Gateway's white is invading his black spots. It isn't graying. It's border crossing.

The farrier is going to come on Thursday. Sabi is still sore, and I think it's the shoe. He's otherwise fine. Not like when he had abscesses and gets droopy/sad. He is just more limpy. He insists on going out, and I'd like him to be more comfortable doing it.

Glad to hear that it may be his shoe. Good to
hear that not sad and droopy like he was with the
abscess.

Sabi only has oone more day before his shoe gets changed. I hope that solves his limping problem. Nothing like having a sore foot to put a bit of a damper on an otherwise nice day to be outside in the pasture with your buds.

I really think it is the shoe. It is poking out past his toe, which is different from what he's had before. I think he likes his heel raised a bit and the toe set back a little bit. I'm sure the farrier will get it fixed.
