Damsons and dogs. Not a good combination

Post by Bob on Wed Sep 14, 2011 8:32 am

I decided that as there were no caravans on one of the fields this week I would give the dogs an extra treat and let them loose on there instead of the back paddock where we usually go.
Honey was taking her own sweet time, sauntering across the farm yard while the others ran on ahead into the paddock. At first I couldn't see Charlie. Bramble, Pol, Pippa and Puddle, but no Charlie. I walked a little further into the paddock, still waiting for Honey to catch up and caught sight of his Charles-ship snuffling around one of the trees. As one of the families that was on last weekend had a dog, I assumed he was sniffing where the other dog had been.
I should have known better.
When Honey eventually trotted into the paddock I made my way down and looked in horror. The tree was laden with damsons and a lot of them had fallen to the ground. Charlie (and Bramble) were both gorgeing pig pig (gorging?) themselves on the fruit (forbidden fruit) and had eaten quite a lot by the looks of them. I'm waiting for the aftermath which is sure to come. Either vomitting or (and here I quote) dire-rear Embarassed , or both. I just hope they don't ferment. I don't want an episode like that moose with the Goldies. Last thing I need is Charlie and Bramble trying to climb a tree to get more damsons. Shocked
Think we'll stick to the back paddock from now on.

Thanks guys. On the plus side, up until 9pm last night there seemed to be no adverse effects. Also on the plus side, the Goldies live in one of the stables so any mess will be easy to clean up (unless they do anything on the carpet in there).
Plus, plus, plus. I found an unopened bottle of gin at the back of a cupboard. Yay.

And to answer your question Suzzzz. Charlie says 'yes, he must' jocolor

OhMy, what mischief! I hope Charlie learns his lesson and doesn't 'imbibe to excess" again. Will this give him a hangover? Suspect

I think Damsons are the plums that work best for cooking. I am a big fan of all kinds of plums and can't really blame Charlie for getting a little enthusiastic. tongue

That sounds like the punchline of a bad joke about where one drinks. tongue In any case, I'm glad neither of you were the worse for wear after your encounters with damsons & gin. I love you

Well dear Charlie has moved onto a new circleof hell. He has started recycling.
Out one end and in the other, if you take my meaning.
I take the boys (the girls are still in quarantine for at least another week) out for their exercise. After a while they will oblige and answer the call of nature.
I didn't realise what was happening at first. I turned to get the snow shovel to go collect the waste (how polite am I.) and when I got to the spot. No waste. Hmmm. Perhaps it was wind I thought and put the shovel back.
Next time I let them out I watched the young chandelier more closely. Yes he had definitely been. I turned to get the shovel once more and was horrified to see him EATING IT. Urp
From then on it has been like some Mack Sennett comedy jocolor with me racing across the paddock waving the snow shovel and trying to get to it before he can devour it again. 90% of the time I win. Rock On
It's the other 10% I hate.

Ewwwwwww..................I know some dogs do that but still.....talk about potty mouth......

There is a medicine you get from the vet to stop dogs from doing that Bob. Don't know what it's called though.

two things i've heard about this problem....1) its sometimes because they are missing something in their diets (sort of like the people who eat starch you put on clothese or chalk) and maybe just need some change in their foods and/or 2)there are things you can put in their food that won't hurt them when it goes in but makes the poop so gross they won't eat it. (like garlic? not sure but i'm sure there's info on the net).

Oh, Lord. I've had dogs that did that. Why can't they stick to cleaning out the catbox like respectable dogs?? (Loved the visual of you bounding across the yard, shouting and waving the snow shovel!)

My only thought is that Charles may be gulping his food so fast that he doesn't digest some and sees the op to do a better job the 2nd time around. But that makes no sense; all dogs gulp their food. You'd think it would be old Bramble who might not digest as well as he used to, not young Charlie. (How old IS Charlie?)

Charlie is about six years old.

I think one of the main problems is that the only food they get are what are called Gun Dog Rings. Meat flavoured biscuits shaped like a larger version of a Cheerio. They're put down in a huge bowl and topped up all the time. In fairness they never go hungry, they just don't get a change of diet.

I read somewhere that it's a sign that they are missing something in their diet, but given Dave's attitude towards the animals I don't think there is any chance of them going to the vet (and I can't afford to take them. I have my two to pay for). He only finished work last Friday and he's already going on about how much the animals are costing him. Stupid really as I know (and so do other people) that the food goes through the books and is claimed against the business. Dog food for the 'guard dogs' (yeh right, they'd lick a burglar to death) and the cat food as they keep down vermin around the farm.
