Danny, Sarah Jane, and Peachy

Post by gbste on Sat Aug 27, 2011 12:44 pm

These kittens were born to the same feral mom as Monty and Barbra, my two fosters who went to another rescue last pet fair. The folks who caught the kittens saw the mama cat bring these three into a stand of tall grass in their neighbor's yard, and then leave them there. They didn't want to leave them even though the mama might have been coming back. Who knows who might have found them in the meantime. They're about 4 weeks old, in the process of being weaned, and they love the formula (lucky for me). I've called them, from left to right, Danny, Sarah Jane, and Peachy. I'm pretty sure of the genders of the first two, but not of Peachy just yet. (Danny and Peachy are named for characters in "The Man Who Would Be King," and Sarah Jane for the wonderful Dr. Who sidekick and companion.

We've only had kittens here for the last couple of years, really. Once we started doing TNR, someone had to take care of the babies. So far, we've been pretty good at fostering instead of keeping, at least once we got the cat numbers up into double digits. We pretty much HAVE to find them homes now. (I thought that Sarah Jane would be a familiar name. Just look at that determined little face!)

I brought them a bigger trap, so we're hoping that will work for catching the mama cat.

These three have been sleeping in a crate. Usually it's open, and they can come and go, but I noticed they weren't going in there much. I replaced the crate with a Hide, Perch, and Go box that I got at the Adoption Options conference. They went right into the lower level as soon as I put it in there. They're too little to get onto the top part, but that day will come. They love their little "fort".

i've seen those boxes at the Animal Rescue Site....sometimes i've wished you could buy them yourselves ...cuz i think it might work better for Nobe. Do you know a place that sells them just a couple at a time or do you have to buy a certain amount (or be affiliated with a rescue)?

and yesh! Sarah Jane looks like she wants to go on some adventures;)

You have to get a whole pallet of them--something like 250. I'm thinking of checking with the rescue we work with in the Springs. I could pay for a pallet if she can use them, she could pick them up at Petco, then the next time we're up there, I could pick up half a dozen of them. A pallet of these is insanely cheap, but you get a ton of them.

Fiffur, you're invited to the kitty pile any time. Very Happy

Peachy was pretty low last night. He had been having diarhea, but he started vomiting too, and he wouldn't come out of the box or eat anything. I gave him some Albon and some home made kitty Pedialyte, and he was out and tearing around in no time. He ate fine this morning, so I think he's feeling better now. I gave him some more Albon and fluids this morning, and Kevin is keeping an eye on him. If he acts sick again, Kevin will get him in to the vet.

Glad to hear that Peachy is feeling better. It's so worrisome when the tinies get sick.

what is Albon? i keep thinking it must be something like pepto for kitties but not sure.
do you think it might be the change in food or the change in atmosphere that might be making him sick? poor little dude...i want to start calling him Rory for the way he keeps getting down but then keeps rallying!

Albon is the standard treatment for kittens and pups with digestive troubles. It settles things down, and acts somewhat like an antibiotic. He was fine on the food, but he may just be a little more sensitive or maybe he just ate too much at once.

Awwww, he just needs a bit more TLC. We had a lil guy just like him in the litter we raised when I was 8. Had lots of tummy issues for several weeks and was the runt too. He pulled through just fine and was the most lovable of the litter for all the extra attention he got. He was the last to find a home, thanks to my father who almost twisted a coworkers arm to adopt him just before our deadline so we couldn't keep him. (damn him--I wanted to keep the lil guy....looked like Peachy only yellow)

Is there solid kitten food that is for sensitive stomachs? I don't know if that would work. But then, I don't know what kind of diet he's getting right now.

These guys are still mostly on formula. They're eating a little bit of kibble too, but mostly the formula. I may add a little yogurt to the formula once a day to see if that helps him out a little. I also have a recipe to make formula for kittens that might be better for them.

Peachy had a pretty good day yesterday until about noon, then he started having trouble again. He's back on the Albon, and I'm giving him a kitty version of Pedialye so that he stays hydrated, so he's hanging in there. Fiffur, he is probably the runt of this litter since he's smaller than the other two, but that may be because he's having all the digestive troubles. They will go in to see the vet next week, and I will ask about possible parasite problems too.

Peachy is much better. He still is not growing as fast as the other two, who seem to get bigger as I watch, but his food is staying inside long enough to do him some good. Sarah Jane is having a run of tummy troubles now, but she's very active and playful, so her problems may be mostly due to over eating. Yesterday she was able to get into the top part of the Hide Perch and Go box all by herself, so she'll soon be dangerous, I'm afraid. Danny is hanging in there and is a very healthy little man with no health issues so far. I need to get them to the vet next week and see if they're old enough to get their first combo shot and worming. Maybe the vet will be open on Monday so that I can get that done during a day off.

Don't worry about Peachys' size, he may be small now but he'll eventually catch up in size with his siblings.
