black ash is a kind of tree, it grows in swampy areas of the Northeast. The infestation started in Michigan (the beetle was brought in on pallets into Detroit) and has spread throughout the Northeast. The process of making the basket material is very interesting., they cut f=down the tree and cut it into lengthsm then whack it with a dull ax or mallet until the tree rings start separatting. they cut this wood into strips and that is what they use to weave the baskets

below is a site that shows how it's done

http://www.blackashbaskets.com/process.html

I went to the wampum jewelry class and made a necklace. basic bead stringing using beadalon wire, and imitation wampum (a single real wampum bead runs about $20) and a real center piece made from the shell the wampum is made out of.

i was thinking it might be these trees we had baCk home that the bark peeled off in big strips...they were light gray or whitish so they looked like ash. basket weaving looks pretty useful:)

We have a few of those trees here Jeane, but I don't know what they're called either. I tried weaving a small basket once when I was a kid, using willow branches. Didn't turn out very well though.

went to the art of wampum jewelry making class at the museum last Thursday. Basic bead stringing class on beadalon wire. we sued synthetu=ic wampum (the real stuff is about $20 a bead! because it's so intensive to make, especially the old native american way. The centepiece was a real piece of polished shell, from wwhich the wmpum is also made.

ove the weekend I showed some of my pins to one of the hostesses at the diner b my house. She asked me if I could make some earrings for her, so I'm working out a design like she wants, for $5. maybe I'll be able to sell some more stuff there to the waitresases.

After they see hers when you're done making them, you probably will. Nothing like actually being able to see and maybe touch a piece to get your work sold faster.

I want to get some stuff done for Cristmas presents this year as well.

You are starting early enough, so if you don't get too distracted by reading you should have plenty of time to get those projects done with time to spare. Might need that time for extra shipping time to make sure it gets where it's going. You know how slow the mail gets after Thanksgiving.

I know you'll find a use for that even if you can't use it now for this project.

I have a tiny crocheted schmousie pin based on my toy pattern.

Making a fleece fitted sheet for my bed so I'll be toasty this winter. I priced them online and it's much cheaper to make it than to buy it. Plus I had leftover fleece fabric in my stash so I didn't have to buy a thing.

Slowly getting that sheet done, it's turning out kinda like a funky crazy quilt with some big pieces and some small pieces. So far so good...........

Have you tried running a piece of coathanger down the drain, to see if you can snag the clog and pull it out? I have to do that with my tub on occasion when it runs slow, it's usually my long hair half-clogging the pipe and I can pull it out. Just straighten a wire hanger and make a very small hook on one end.............a bit stiff to put down the drain but it works.

i actually have some afghan hooks i use for that....nothing came up when i tried. don't have any wire coat hangers around here....they're coming very rare at least in NJ! i'm keeping my eye on the 'as seen on tv' drain snake thingie we have at work. i've wanted one for a while and am waiting to see if they will go on sale or if i'll get a good coupon i can use for it. meanwhile, its taking half an hour for a cup of water from brushing my teeth to drain!

That's pretty bad...................you definitely need to get farther down the drain than you've been going so far. There's something clogging it in there. Are any of the other drains very slow? Or just this one? If it's all of them, it's possible a tree root has grown into the line and is blocking that off. That's what happens to ours here.......and they have to rotorooter it every few years to keep the apartment main line clear to the main in the road.

naw,its not a tree root...its just crap that's fallen into the sink and i can't get out. there's also the same black mold gunk that gets in the toilet in the drain. i can reach down to the curve in the pipe and nothing comes out.
i need to get vinegar and baking soda and try that ....and another big bottle of bleach. i think if i just kept at it for a couple days straight i might be able to get somewhere.
