My mom remembers party lines...........and she ran a switchboard like Sarah's when she was in high school.

We had a party line--by accident--once when I was a kid. Phone service was all screwed up in the trailer park that day and we couldn't get the woman off the line so we could report it to the phone company to get the problem fixed.

We had the party-line-from-hell when I was a kid. It was a nototiously loony woman by the nickname of "Crazy Mary." I know, I may resemble that remark Wink , but this gal really was off her rocker. She would pick up her telephone and just talk into it for hours on end, and it went on for years on end too. Nobody on the other end of the line - just her. The poor old thing was delusional, and would repeat "they're coming to steal my house away" and things along that line. My folks were very forgiving of her, and in hindsight, I can see why they were kind about her tying up the phone line - she deserved our pity and understanding, but as a kid, I couldn't figure out why she had to talk into an empty line when I wanted to talk to my friends. She would get on the line while we were talking and just jabber on - I don't think she could hear very well either, because she seemed not to know we were on the phone. My folks just kept telling us to let the poor thing talk. That was one wild childhood memory.

Editing to say that this is NOT something I remember fondly and miss from my childhood! Rolling Eyes

What a wild story, Mary! As an adult I'm sure you appreciate how kind your parents were to the poor old crazy lady, but as a kid you must have been pretty ticked off! All I had to deal with were my younger brothers listening in on another extension when I was talking to my friends. As an adult...... I've just remembered I'm gonna get 'em for that! Mad

Suzzzz, it was one of those kooky memories from my childhood, and as it turns out, just a few years ago when I was still in our payroll department, the subject of party lines came up and I told the story to my coworkers, and one of them lived just a block or two from Crazy Mary when she was little! She's a few years younger than I am, and told me that she was always afraid of CM because she thought CM was a witch! LOL! She probably was rather unkempt, knowing how strangely she acted. Worlds collided that day!

Only problem with someone like her............if you needed the phone to dial for emergency services like the police, ambulance, or firetruck you wouldn't be able to get the call through.

I remember being able to go out at night for walks with my mom after dark, and not worrying about anyone bothering us (like robbers, etc.). Remember, I grew up in a small town.

I do remember using a card catalogue where pull out a drawer to look up the call number at the public library. I don't know how it's done now.

It shows that I haven't used the library to check out books in years.

My lil library here still had their card catalog until a few years ago. Now it's all online, and still a bit difficult at times to find what you're looking for. One advantage though, online you can see what other libraries have you can borrow. Couldn't do that with the old card catalog system.

The library system here lets you see which branch has what book(s) you want and indicate which branch you want the book(s) be taken to if the closest branch doesn't have it.

Nabisco used to make them back in the 70's and early 80's. They were so good my mom and I could make a package of them evaporate in minutes. Shocked It was a cookie bar ( more like a candy bar) that was a sugar wafer smothered in chocolate, peanuts, and caramel. There are several clone recipes online for them and I might try one and see if it's close to what I remember them being like. This is how someone online described them: vanilla wafers covered with caramel until the gooey flavor of it seeped into the cookie itself, topped with chocolate and crumbled peanuts. It was everything that is good about dessert in one package. Damn, these things were good--crunchy, chewy, rich, mellow, sweet, teetering between vanilla and chocolate, with caramel always in the mix. They were almost ethereal...although it's unlikely any kid ever used that word to describe them.

I wrote to the company and asked if there was any chance of them being brought back on the market. We'll see if I get a response or not.

I was at Wal Mart last week and walked past two games I remember as a kid. Hungry, hungry hippos and Cooties.

I remember those Fluff, you can always tell the classics. They are still around more than 40 years or so........some of the games kids play these days won't be around for their kids.

Anybody remember the Yertle the Turtle game? I barely remember the Seuss book but I loved the game, balancing little turtles on a balanced fan. Utterly impossible.

And I remember the book, but not the game. I'll have to go look it up on the 'net.

Good luck -- it was NOT popular because it was so ridiculously impossible. I liked it, though. I think that's where I first formed my ruling philosophy of "Oh, well." tongue

I can't say that I have read Yertle the Turtle book. If I had read any Dr. Seuss books as a kid, I don't remember it. I do remember seeing two Dr. Seuss books in a bookcase that my parents had.
