its Dress Your Pet day (so says the calender)

Post by jeanebellini on Fri Jan 14, 2011 8:25 pm

i'm not into putting clothes on critters unless they are fur free and need to keep warm or the sun off them.
BUT one time for one day...what the hell.
i can't remember where i got this....probably at NYCC....but Salem seemed to tolerate it...

well, not so much at first...
then things changed.....

if he's going outside he should have one...with a nice tag so he can be brought home if he chases those squirrels too far! (I think i have a nice collar here but its pink and yellow...got it at B'way Cares a few years ago....but i don't know if his manly catness would be diminished being seen in a pink and yellow collar!

Antonio is chipped but the collar and tag would add an
extra layer of protection.

well, salem did model some costumes when he was isolated upstairs. i think they're in photobucket. i don't know if he'd tolerate dressing up in anything more tha a lei or something light and small anymore;)

Salem looks adorable...I s'pose. However, I'm one of those that thinks "Thou shalt not dress thy pet" should be The Eleventh Commandment ;-)

I'm kinda with Arnigal on this. Except for practical wear, like blankets for horses or warm coats for dogs who must be walked in freezing temps, I'm not into dressing pets. It doesn't seem respectful since they don't understand. Especially costumes and such; it just doesn't seem right to turn them into clowns for our amusement. That being said, however, my late black lab Abby paid very close attention to her collars and truly seemed to love a "change of clothes" with a new season. She had green collars for spring, bright pink or yellow collars for summer, and deep purples and blues for winter. She'd get very excited about new ones and pranced around showing them off. I think the difference is that the collars were hers and she liked looking snazzy. If I had tried to bundle her into an elf costume or something, she would have been bewildered, hurt and resentful. Does that make sense?

Hmmm.... I don't think our pets mind entertaining us for a few minutes -- especially for the sake of a picture. Let's face it... We bend over backwards to be sure they are fed, housed, well, and entertained. Now, the poor pets who have to get toted around in purses and wear stupid clothes all the time are put through too much.

I think it's just fine that Salem agreed to pose for his picture. And quite the handsome fella he is, too! Cool

i don't believe in clothes on critters either (unless, like its been said, its for a critter who needs the clothes to keep warm due to their fur and the weather....or for critters like those furfree kitties and dogs who otherwise would get sunburned in the summer) Salem never had any of his stuff on for more than a minute...two tops. the costumes were from when he was recouperating upstairs and he was quite the spoiled hamcat back then. the lei was something i got somewhere...NYCC maybe? he was just laying there watching me as i unpacked my bags and when i put the lei on him he didn't move so i clicked away:)

Salem as Rescue Kitty (do I look like i'm flying?)

The devil in the black cat suit

witchy kitty

i'm not jesting

not a costume...this is the little vest thing for the leash i had to use when he came down to visit when he was recouperating.(he wasn't amusing having to wear that but it was something he had to do)

Re: its Dress Your Pet day (so says the calender)

From my experience with dogs and cats, I'd say there is a marked difference in their attitudes about being dressed up. Any cat I've ever had would NOT have liked it - and Lord knows I woud NEVER have tried to do anything like that to my Blue because he was definitely his own cat and demanded a certain amount of decorum. On the other hand, most dogs I've known would have been just thrilled to do things that brought a smile or a giggle to their owner, and wouldn't have minded being dressed up if it made their people smile. Hats and shoes were always uncomfortable for our dogs, so we never used them (tried the snow shoes on Grommit once and even though I laughed out loud because he was flipping around in them and looked like a seal, he did not want them on - period).

My two current dogs don't dress up though. We have some bandanas and holiday collars for them, but nothing more elaborate than that. Too much fur to deal with.

oh yeah, there are days when i have almost put my underwear on over my work pants;)
the only kitty here to tolerates anything on is Salem....though i did put a cheeto (or maybe it as a soy packing peanut) on Cartier's head to make him look like a unicat;) It was so small and light that i don't think he knew it was there!

Bijoux tolerated my winter scarf wrapped around his neck for about 10 minutes a couple years ago, long enough to snap a few pics. He's standing by the front door looking back as if to say "I'm ready to go out now."

Petie refuses to wear anything provided by people. He used to be the collar escapee. We always put on safety collars and he could get out of those quicker than any cat I ever met. I think he knew how to work those snaps. We gave up after collar #2 disappeared in less than 1/2 an hour. Archimedes (Petie's brother) would put himself through sweater sleeves if we let him. I think he liked clothes he could hide in.

I wonder what Petie would do with an H-harness...............those are a lot harder to get out of than a collar.
