Thank you all for the good wishes and support.
We just returned from another walk at the park. It's just lovely there any time of year and while it was chilly today (and we just beat the rain!) it was still a great walk. More dogs out this morning, but our girls did not bark at them and handled the situations very well. We saw a man sitting on one of the benches and he was very interested in Georgia Rose (he called both of them "beautiful" but he really seemed interested mostly in Georgia). We asked if he'd like to say hi and he said yes. Georgia gave him doggie kisses and he just loved her. Very Happy

A little correction on the previous post...I meant to say it's good for Hildy to be with us so that she can model the proper walking behavior for Georgia Rose. I was going to edit that, but I can't. So, just to clarify what I was saying.

I just can't believe how this leash walking is panning out. It's just wonderful. I almost don't even recognize the little dog at the end of that pink leash. While Georgia has always been sweet, she's also been a mess; very high energy and just all over the place. She's so calm and happy walking on the leash. This has been the best weekend with her we've ever had.

Next week we're supposed to learn 5 new skills, so lots of work there. I'm just so pleased with how she's doing so far, I can't even believe it.

It was so nice of Georgia Rose to give that guy in the park kisses. Very Happy And without the leash training that sweet moment wouldn't have been possible.

We can never really know what's going on in our dogs' heads. It's entirely possible that Georgia Rose has been frantically looking for the right way to do right. Conflicting incoming signals from you, Joshua, Hildy and her own ideas may have caused mass confusion in her little doggy brain. But it sounds like she has finally found a centerpoint to tell her what to do in one clear voice. My guess is she is hugely relieved, grateful and delighted to hear it!

Not to say the conflicts are entirely gone... she may break out once or twice when confused on what to do when, say, a squirrel gives her the business right under her nose. Mad A smart dog like that does have her own ideas, after all! But as long as everyone sticks to the program with regular practice, I suspect Georgia will become one of the best behaved dogs ever. Because that's really all she wants, you know, to do you right. What a good, sweet dog!!

Guess we'll see about how well Georgia Rose's training is progressing when she sees a squirrel in the park......

Or when a jogger passes her while yelling to a friend, or when another dog in the park freaks out, or when a jalapeno drops to the floor and you do NOT want her to snatch it up and eat it. Anything can happen! The nice thing about a well-trained dog is that they will look to you first before going off on their own ideas.

(Well, food may be an issue. My dear departed Black Lab, Abby, the best trained dog in the universe, ate the jalapeno. We were all sorry about that one. silent )

We found that teaching the dogs two simple commands, 'STOP' & 'LEAVE IT' have proven to be very useful. They know that as soon as either is said, they do it. Stop works at corners, so they don't just dart out into the street, and also when they chase Bobby too much. Leave it is good for when they sniff stuff they shouldn't and also when you drop that jalapeƱo on the kitchen floor.

Squirrels, however, are tough. I can keep Lyra calm in the house when she sees one, but out in the park, she is driven. Of course, we haven't stressed it enough.

Hey, what's the latest on Georgia Rose's training? Or does she have to wait for a while before going on? A note about squirrels--our squirrels are kinda pets, we have feeders up for them and all, and Lucie loves to sit on the front porch and watch them because she knows they are for looking and not for chasing, I guess!

Re: Georgia Rose training (update!)...

Post by mockingbird on Thu Feb 10, 2011 9:24 pm

Sorry friends about not updating for a couple of weeks!

Thankfully, Georgia is behaving herself when we tell her to leave the squirrels alone at the park. Hildy does, too. No pulling to go chase a squirrel, for which I'm thankful. There are tons of squirrels at that park, too.

Her training is going really well. She continues to do well in class and with her lessons at home, although for most things it will be a continuing process. She is well behaved in class and the trainer just loves her. We are very proud of her.

This next week though, has me a little worried. It's going to be properly greeting humans, which will be a challenge because she is a jumper and just loses her mind when people come over (we rarely have company, so it's a big deal when we do.) We will also be properly greeting another dog (if the dog seems ok.) I'm nervous about that. I don't know how it's going to work out, as we do have two aggressive dogs in the class who continue to be aggressive. I'm sure the trainer won't let anything happen to Georgia Rose, but I am worried, and trying not to be because I don't want her to pick up any negative stuff from me.

Keep us in your thoughts, dear friends. We have 3 more weeks to go.

Sounds like everything is going really well. I wouldn't worry about
the dog greeting session. I'm sure the trainer will not pair those dogs
with the calmer dogs. The jumping I think will be the hardest. Still
glad to hear that all is going well.

between now and class maybe you could go to places where new people are and maybe ask a few if they wouldn't mind practicing the greeting with you. it shouldn't take more than a minute or something, right? i know i'd do it if someone asked me;)
in fact,i'd like to have had something like that for the Rescue Kitties....Buddy and Salem were always the greeters, sometimes Franny and Toothpick won't flee when someone comesdown here but Cartier is another story. too bad there's no cat training classes!

Georgia's greatest challenges are what you have her in class for. You trust the trainer, yes? Things have gone well so far, right? Well, have faith. The trainer knows these last lessons are the hardest, and that's why they come at the end of the class. Have courage, my dear, and approach the session with confidence that you have a good, smart dog and a savvy, experienced teacher. Let it unfold and see where it takes you before you second-guess. I love you

Hoo boy, Bird, you sound like me! I worry all the time about my dog! Even when there's no reason to--which I'm sure there is not in your case, like everybody says--but it's hard not to, isn't it? Stay strong! Best wishes for your success...
