Rattyton...

Post by mockingbird on Thu Oct 07, 2010 9:19 pm

I mentioned it on the Introductions forum, and I have thought a hundred times "I need to let my Mutties friends know about the new babies!"
So, here I am, to introduce you to our newest additions to our little furry family...

~~~Rodent Warning~~~
*I know this is a site devoted to pets, but in case you are squemish about rodents, then please be forwarned that this post *is* about rodents! Rats in particular. If you don't mind...or you happen to think pet ratties are as cute as I do, then please read on.*
We have acquired the most adorable pet ratties in the world! At least we think so.
We have Sweetie...who just is an absolute sweetie, then there's Ghost (as in Space Ghost, due to her markings). We have Raya, our little lightning bolt (rayo is Spanish for lightning bolt, so Raya is the feminine, named for her markings, and for her quickness.) And lastly, little Slumber...who is aptly named.
I will see if I can get some pictures posted soon. They are so cute, I can't even stand it! Very Happy
Oh, in case you're wondering...Desperado kitty isn't very interested, Hildegard (our German Shepherd, in case I haven't "met" you yet) doesn't care one speck about them. It's little Georgia Rose who absolutely LOVES them! When we move them into a smaller cage for Ratty Playtime (we set up my bathroom every night with tunnels and toys for the ratties to have out-of-cage time), Georgia Rose loves to watch them in the travel cage. We don't forget she is a hunting dog, but she doesn't seem to want to hurt them...just wants to watch them. She'll cry to see them sometimes! The ratties aren't afraid of her one bit, either. We do not let them play together, because of safety for everyone, but she just loves them. Very Happy
p.s...We call the large main cage Rattyton (well, sweet husband calls it Ratton, but well...it's Rattyton to me.) Wink
Here is Ghost (black face) and Slumber in the Lego house. We since found out that Lego houses are best for playtime and not for the main cage (not enough air circulation...ratties are prone to respiratory infections. It's still a cute picture, though...
So, instead of the Lego house, they now have...a play log!
That's Ghost on the bottom left, Slumber on the right and Raya at the top.
Both Ghost and Raya are called Dumbo rats because of their ears.
That's all the pictures I have for now. My camera needs to be cleared out of vacation pictures, and then more will be shared!
Here's one of Sweetie eating a Cheerio (or rattie doughnuts, as we call them!)
I wouldn't think of rats making good pets, but I guess they can be.
I can't see the pics, but the ratties sound adorable. I think they're cute, I've had mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs as pets. My B-I-L had a pet rattie when my sister first started dating him, and Connie was so cute and so smart. Very playful too.
Can someone please send me the pics as an email attachment so I can see them too?
I thought the pictures are cute. I barely remember my brother having hamsters as pets, then there was the problem of the occasional hamster escape with cats in the house.
Thank you everyone! They are so cute. Very Happy
We just give them the plain Cheerios for a snackie sometimes. The other flavors
have too much sugar in them for the little ratties. They seem to be fine with the plain,
and they also like Total. It has some sugar, but not much...and has lots of vitamins, too.
I have lots to share with you about how we're figuring out how to care for them...but it's late
and we're going out of town tomorrow, so that will have to wait.
Fiffur, I sent you the pictures in an e-mail. Hope you can see them now. Very Happy
Goodnight everyone! Rattyton is wide awake now, but the rest of us are sleepy.
Typical of lil ratties, they love to play when it's late and dark outside. Meanwhile everyone else wants to sleep.
Got the pics, they are soooo cute! I wanna hear more..................please..............
I had a couple of white mice as a kid, and am very open to ratties, especially ones as adorable as your crew, Mockingbird. LOVE the pile-up in the log! I love you
So glad you were able to see them, fiffur. From now on, I will make sure to send you an e-mail with any and all pictures I post. Very Happy
Thank you, dear ARNIgal and jeanebellini and Suzzzz (and all of the dear Mutties, actually) for making our sweet ratties feel right at home. SusanA...I will try my best not to get too many tail pictures, and if they do show up, I will let you know. Wink I know some people are kind of weirded out by their tails.
We've revamped Rattyton a bit. We listened to the folks at PetsMart and put paper bedding (made especially for Pocket Pets, hee hee) down on the bottom of the cage. It turned out to be one big litter box! Phew! So, I went on a site called the Dapper Rat and the man who writes the blogs and things said that ratties could be litter box trained like a cat, but only for poo. Wee is a different matter.
Anyway, it worked! We just put in a pan large enough for them to use it without it tipping over, filled it with rattie box litter and they are only going in the box! We put down t-shirt fabric for the bedding for the rest of the bottom of the cage. We can just toss the fabric in the washer. It's a lot easier to keep things clean now. I love our ratties but I don't want our house smelling of them.
I will be taking more pictures of the ratties and of everyone soon.
I know I am way overdue to share more pictures with you dear folk.
i can't remember if its mice or rats i heard this about...but some show said that they sort of pee a little all the time (leaves a scent marker?) so maybe that's why they don't use the litter box for that.
No, they don't. I've had pet mice and handled them all the time and they never peed on me no matter how long I held them.
Well...I've held the ratties a lot and they haven't wee'd on me...but they do wee a lot when they sleep. I've been trying to find something harmless to spray on them to tone down the wee smell in their fur, but no luck so far. Keeping the cage clean is the best I can do. I use vinegar to get rid of odors and to clean, but have been lessening on it because I'm afraid too much vinegar would not be good for them to smell. They have delicate respiratory systems, and the Dumbos have already had to be treated for respiratory infections. So, I've been using vanilla to cover the smell, and it is nicer and is working.
Here is a new picture taken just today of the ratties (all four of them!) piled up in their log house...
They were all asleep, but then Ghost woke up and smiled for the camera. Very Happy
*fiffur...an e-mail has already been sent to you.* Cool
