Three tiny kittens

Post by gbste on Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:57 am

Last night I got a phone call from one of my animal rescue friends. Seems that someone had shown up at her place with 3 tiny kittens in a bucket. The woman had found the kittens in the street, and didn't know what to do with them. At least she got them out of the gutter. My friend doesn't know how to care for little kittens, so she asked me to take them overnight, as she had someone who would take them in the morning. She brought them over last night--three little girls, about 4 weeks old. The black one is in good shape, except for some ringworm. The calico has gummy eyes, but is pretty strong. The tortie is very weak. Her eyes were stuck shut, and very swollen. I put a warm wet compress on her eyes, and a TON of pus came out. I rinsed her eyes with a saline solution, and put in some medicine for the infection. All 3 ate kitten formula last night--2 feedings. I had to make the little tortie eat, but the other 2 were happy to get the formula. They had a good breakfast (and eye wash for the 2 that needed it) this morning, and Kevin took them over to the vet who said they'd take them after dropping me at work. I hope that placement doesn't fall through. I am full up, and so is every other cat person I know. I'm worried about these little girls.

Awwwww, in spite of their obvious health issues, they all sound so cute. Can you request that whoever takes these lil darlings in to raise give you updates, as you are concerned about them?

Is it possible the two with eye issues have allergies and it got out of hand? My sister's past Maine Coon Merlin used to get his eyes gummed shut every fall during ragweed season. If not for the meds and compresses, he'd have had it much worse, like the lil tortie.

Please keep us posted if you can about these three.

Little orphaned kittens are really prone to eye infections, so I'm thinking it's an infection rather than an allergy, especially since there was some improvement overnight.

Still haven't heard from Kevin, so I hope everything worked out.

They were still having some problems with their eyes, but their eyes were open and the amount of discharge was within the "normal" range at least.

Well, the plan for a foster through the vet didn't work out (that's a long and involved small town tale), so I picked them up after school. I managed to get them into foster with Sherbet's foster mom, who has 2 bottle babies right now, and was willing to take these 3 as well. We sent them off with 2 cans of formula, some amoxi from the vet, and some eye wash and eye meds. Once I got them all sent out, I got a call from another friend who is willing to foster them as well, so maybe they'll divide up the babies.

Just catching up with this. Bless the woman who found the kittens and got them
to safety. Bless all of you who are keeping the safe and helping them heal.
I hope the girls can stay together till they are stronger.

Ah... The small town tale. It's like that where I live too. I am glad that other volunteers stepped up though. It sounds like the babies are in good hands.

Thankfully the one who found these three kittens knew to give them to someone who can help them. This did remind me of poor Arwen who was dumped with her littermates by a creek. Evil or Very Mad Fortunately, a much kinder person who happened to come along and discovered Arwen and put her in the nearest shelter for care. I hope there will be more good news for the kittens.

So glad to hear not only are their eyes doing better, but that other folks stepped up to take these lil ones when the vet's offer fell through. I hope you get updates, as I'd like to know how they're doing too. Bless that person who found them and brought them to you, bless the people who are losing sleep to nurse and raise them, bless the people who will find them loving homes............and most of all bless the lil kittens themselves. They remind us how to care for someone besides ourselves.

Re: Three tiny kittens

Post by gbste on Wed Oct 06, 2010 5:34 pm

Update: Two of the three kittens are doing well--eating formula and Fancy Feast with no problems. The one kitten that had the bad eye infection was having lots of trouble eating. A vet check found that all three kittens had worms so bad that they couldn't be dewormed in the usual way. If all the worms were killed at once, it would have caused a blockage! The huge parasite load was causing the smallest kitten abdominal pain. They are on a de-worming program of many small doses. The weakest kitten is getting smaller, but more frequent feedings, and she's hanging in there. These little girls are so lucky to have such a patient and loving foster mom! She's gone above and beyond the call to care for these little orphans.

Good Lord, I never heard of a parasite load that big.
I'm so glad that the smallest one is so game. Blessing to
their Foster Mom.

Poor babes to have such a heavy burden of parasites at such a young age. I'm so glad foster mom is going above and beyond the call of duty to do what is right by the smallest wee kitten. I'm sure she'll pull through and catch up sizewise with the others. So glad to hear they're responding to treatment and are doing well. Any chance on a pic of these lil cuties?

I remember the litter we handraised when I was 8. The smallest had a really rough time: diahhrea, couldn't keep formula down, etc. We really babied that lil guy and he not only pulled through but turned out to be the healthiest, friendliest one of the bunch. I really cried when he left our home, I wanted to keep him soooo badly. Little yellow tiger so full of spunk.

I would really love to see pics of these tiny lil cuties! Probably will bring back memories of teeny tiny kittens mewing in my ear first thing in the morning. My mom would put them on our pillow as our alarm clock, and lil babes got breakfast before we kids even got dressed.

The kittens' foster mom left me her camera today so that I could see these pictures, and I thought you folks would like to see them too. Everyone looks healthy and happy. Still a little ringworm, but bright eyed! (Fiffur, check your email)

Poor babies. Hopefully their rocky start in life will be their only great hurdle, and that it will go smoothly from her on out.
