Indeed, Fluff! The first half of the book was basically boring. Then he threw in some torture stuff, then the mystery got a bit more interesting, but then it was back to torture and nasty human interactions. I have no idea why this book is so popular.

Anyway, I'm now reading the new Marian Keyes, I have the new Margaret Maron on hold at the library, and the new Jennifer Weiner comes out this week. Life is good!

There's no telling why some books are sooo popular and some get very little to no attention at all. I have read more interesting books that don't involve torturing people and vampires.

I wish I knew. There are so many under-rated writers and books out there.

it kinda goes in phases....right now people can make money with vampires and the torture stuff started a decade or so ago. I wouldn't read Koontz because i thought he was all torture and stuff but the Brother Odd books changed my mind. Well, at least the one i read. there were scarey parts in there but it was brief and not so bad.
One good thing about libraries..you don't have to feel so bad if you get a book and don't like it. you can just stop reading it and put in the 'go back' pile without putting out a penny:)

(I just realized that ever since i left home, every place i've lived has been within walking distance of a library!)

The books and authors that get overlooked can be the best ones someone can find and read. In the past few years, two authors that I never heard of were recommended to me by two different people. I followed through with both recommendations and have actually enjoyed reading the two authors.

Friend recs are often the best. Like I said, my friend has recommeded many great books. I've found a lot of great authors and read a lot of great books through family and friends (including some from you guys) that I would never have known about otherwise. Not all books are a good fit for all people, obviously -- they and we are all different. But like Jeane said, we lose nothing by trying a library book. Thank God for libraries! And thanks to Benjamin Franklin, too, who formed the first public lending library in America. I can't imagine my life without a library.

i would never had read Paterson or Evanovich if it weren't for a friend at work telling me about them. she actually has me finding out all different authors going through ones that have linked titles...like Evanovich with her #1ed books, Paterson and his fairly tale titles....i started reading the books with the black cats and the food in the title. And the coffee house mysteries and the flower shop mysteries. I actually discovered the coffee house books because i was told if you can't find a new book in the library to look in the large print section. I sometimes find brand new King books in there!

oh try something else by King....have you read other of his stuff? he's got books of short stories but i'd tell ya to try The Stand. Its a big book but its one that can drive you right through it.

i haven't read much of the flower shop mystery the past few days. i spent most of today sleeping so i haven't read more than a few pages of it today.

Read 'Enchanted Glass' by Diana Wynne Jones a couple of months ago. Sped through the Harry Dresden book 'Turn Coat' and now I'm trying to get through 'Unseen Academicals' by Terry Pratchett.
Apparently a new Dresden book is out called 'Changes' so I'm waiting for that to make it across the pond.

I haven't read Nation. I got it for Beryl and while she enjoyed it she said it wasn't as good as his Diskworld books.

Thanks Jeanne. I read about the new book on Wikipedia and was shocked by the ending. Still can't wait to read it though.

oo...interesting...don't tell me what it is. (I don't wiki unless somebody directs me over there cuz i don't trust the stuff that's in there 100%). but i wonder if Jim will be at NYCC this year....i hope so. I always like to stop and say HI and get the latest book (even though i won't admit to him that i've piled them up and haven't had time to read them yet!). so far every year he's remembered me. (If not,i think all i have to do is say "the Doctor Who chick").

Well if he's there ask him if there is going to be another Dresden book will you? He's doing one called 'Ghost Story' and I want to know if that will be the last HD book.
