Movies that I like and everybody hates.

Post by Sue Short on Sat Aug 14, 2010 10:00 pm

Ok bad header but what do you want after a half a
bottle of wine.

I like Gone With the Wind. It was wonderfully cast, production
values were great, along with the soundtrack. It is nothing like the
book, and how many in here have the read the book.

Anyway back to my movie.

(One last note, Jim Carey, drinks ditch water.)

Ah - a woman after my own heart. I'll admit, I have to be in the mood for GWTW, but only because I have seen it many times before. I think Jim Carrey has some nerve thinking he can do justice to the role of Curly Howard in the ill-fated Farelly brothers Three Stooges movie.

I probably like several movies that everyone else hates, but obviously, The Wizard of Oz is high on the "strongly dislike" for many people, and I think it's terrific - even though I can't STAND Judy Garland. Go figure.

I understand about the Wizard of Oz, it's been parodied so much
that I flinch at the thought of it.

Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Frank Morgan were all terrific in the film; and who could ever forget Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West?? She personifies the term "witch," you have to admit. The songs by Harold Arlen are some of the most memorable in all movie history too. What a terrific film.

ooo.....Jim Carrey's done some good out of his norm stuff in his indie films. There's one that is waaaayy off his usual but i can't get the whole title in my head..its got the word Sunshine in it. (its a movie about people who get the memory of just one person erased from their minds). Its really different....just the movie itself is different.
the Truman show isn't his usual falling over things movie either....gawd, i think i spent about 100 hrs watching that one when it was still in the theaters.

Judy Garland....there's a few of her movies i will watch whenever i can, but not everything. I can sort of come and go with her. I remember seeing Meet me in St Louis when i was a kid and not understand why they were throwing flour on each other. but i love the christmas part.
i haven't seen Oz in a couple years cuz i swear one cable station was showing it every other week. i liked it when i only got to see it once a year and it was an event to sit down with the family and view it.(like i said in the other thread, my dad was a projectionist when it was out and he got me hooked on it). i'm not a person who buys all the little do dads that go along with the movie, but i have a couple buttons and rubber stamps.

I'm trying to think of a couple movies i love that people just hate...things with Bud Cort in them come to mind. some movies i love the originals of and am really sick that you can't see them but just the remakes...like Bedazzled (julie annnnndrrewwws! and nuns on trampolines!) and Hair Spray for sure.

and for you sue and your ditchwater... Razz (though i will admit his taste in women is pretty crappy!)

Sue, I read that book! And it's sequel Scarlett. And I have both of the movies on dvd too.

Jeane, you're thinking Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I've seen that movie. Very interesting and different movie. Not Carrey's usual type of movie.

i remembered after i shut down for the night (actually, not when i shut the computer down but when i was shutting down;) ) that i didn't mention the 3 Stooges movie. i agree with ya...i don't see Jim in any of those roles...the only thing i could see him doing is playing someone that was on the same bill as them when they did vaudeville! I remember the movie they did for TV and the guys they had for that were pretty good..i don't know what stars would be good for the Stooges now.

Yep, that's the movie..Spotless Mind. He also did Man on the Moon which was different....i didn't like it right off the bat but it grew on me (I really love the sound track as well). There's a film in the can at the moment that may never see the light of day due to production co money problems. i think it would have been really different as well....he played a gay guy who was in prison.

Ya know i think we've talked about Titanic as well...i liked the old black and white version but not the one that was the hot movie for so long. that just dragged on and on to me. Private Benjamin was one that could have been cut to about 45 to keep my attention...the only reason i sat in the movie theater and watched it was because David Kaufman was in it....he was on for maybe 30 seconds and said i believe two lines..esh!

Pound Puppies and the Legend of Big Paw. It was one of my fav movies as a kid. I have it on DVD and....as an adult I know it is not a very good movie but I still like it.

I'll give you that - Carrey did a good job in Man on the Moon. But I fell asleep during The Truman Show.

oh man...i'm laughing...cuz i saw the Truman Show so many times in the theater that i think once(when it was at the $1 theater in the mall) even i fell asleep on part of it! i did love the way he looked in that one. (and there was a guest appearance of a doxie....always cool to see a doxie, pug or black cat in a movie).

I never did care for Spaceballs. It reminded me too much of Star Wars and I figured it was meant to do that anyway.

yep Space Balls is Mel Brooks' take on Star Wars. Just like he did Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles (that's one that people love or hate!),Silent Movie, High Anxiety, History of the World (Pt1).....gawd...i know i've missing something! I used to be able to rattle off all Mel's films like someone doing a rosary. (he's the reason i got a degree in film way back when films were made on reels and you had to schlep heavy cameras, lights, etc around campus to make them).

How about The Producers, JB? I mean the original, with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder? I absolutey LOVE that one. And of course, The Twelve Chairs too! Both are terrific movies. I'm lukewarm on Spaceballs (though there is some funny stuff in it), Dracula, Dead and Loving It, and Robin Hood, Men in Tights.

You know I think I'm the only one who likes
the version of Robin Hood that Kevin Costner
did. Morgan Freeman was in it too. It really
was bad.

oh bobcat,i was trying to remember the movies Mel made that were take offs/satires of genres.
The Producers I love....the ORIGINAL that is....I love Nathan Lane but the B'way Show version (though probably great on the stage)had nothing on the original movie!

Nope Sue, you're not the only one. I like it too. Alan Rickman was great to watch in that, and I always enjoy Morgan Freeman.

The Producers opened in Chicago as a precursor to its B'way run, and I got to see Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in it at that time. It was very good, but I agree that nobody can touch Zero and Gene Wilder in those roles!

I remember that one. I loved the inflatable pilot too!

How about Re-Animator? I love that movie, but some folks don't like it. It has humor, gory humor, but parts of it are still funny.
